Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello,
A few of us are looking for off-piste guide for a day in Pas de la Casa/Grau Roig...
We're intermediate so not after backcountry, just to learn the safe bits between the pistes that we can then explore on our own.
Anybody know where we can find one? Somewhere in town? The local ski school? You?
We'll be the 10-17 March...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I used to work at the ski school in Soldeu.
There is a chap there called Stuart Fleming who runs the off piste ski touring for the area. He’s very knowledgable .... say Jules recommended him. He’s very well trained and has been there for many years. He’ll be at soldeu ski school. Can’t get better than him, as they have a monopoly on the mountain, so no independent guides, unless it’s changed in the last few years.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

They have a freeride school now. Quite possibly that lad is involved with it. But yeah AFAIK there are no independent instructors that are able to work in resort.
If you do go it alone (which I don't recommend it you don't have a minimum of knowledge/experience [usual caveat]) then be wary of the steeps above Soldeu where several blacks come down to the plateau. It is known to slide, and sadly has charged the highest price more than once. There's absolutely tons of mellow stuff around Grandvalira though, if you're able to assess the risks (and of course have the gear).
You've picked a great time of year to find the goods, btw. Probability-wise it couldn't be better.

Thanks for the info! I will speak to Stuart. Yeah I wouldn't feel confident going it alone (even with a small group of us) as we don't have a lot of experience off piste. Only on the bits between runs / off the side / through trees etc. Don't need Art of Flight level stuff.
