Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi - hopefully a quick one: My son's keen to start race training at the local fridge and beyond - if we can fit it in around rugby, homework etc etc.
He's 14 and 5'10 so 178cm. Weighs about 65kgs. Solid little skier. Not super aggressive but good angles and smooth. He's always skied twin tips.
What length slalom skis should I be on the lookout for please?
thanks!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I’m 72kg 5’10 and ski 155 for fridge and plastic, as does almost every other bloke I know or see racing,
I’m currently on head SLR 155 which is a nice relatively soft slalom ski, I’m not a particularly aggressive skier compared to “proper”amateur racers. The slightly cheaper/softer junior race skis (eg dynastar r20 series) top out at 149cm, which may also be an option but might be too soft, particularly if he wants to use them outside a fridge.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

203 for slalom, 207 or 210 for GS.
At least when I was a kid.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

At age 14 and starting gate training definitely go for a children's slalom ski @ 150 cm, and try some different makes if you can, most popular currently are Fischer or Dynastar and most seem to love one and not get on with the other. My daughter is 5' 8, age 15 and has been race training for a few years, she skis 150s on plastic, indoor and alpine.
Go to a couple of sessions on any old ski and talk to the parents and coaches, see if there's anything for sale second hand to start with and at our club the kids try each others skis from time to time to see how the brands compare.
Hope this helps.

Great info, thanks. He’ll not be happy going in his knackered old twin tips but it sounds like a plan until we land something suitable somewhere from 150 to 155
