Poster: A snowHead
|
I am thinking of doing a ski season in Saalbach from February till the end of the season. Is it a good ski resort? I was wondering where is a good place to live, is Maishofen too far, or is there a better place? Also not quite sure how I am meant to find accommodation without being there, are there any sites I could look at? Unfortunately, I can't get accommodation through a job because I already have one.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Saalbach is the 4th best ski resort in Austria.
It is a medium resort with medium runs.
Ski season is mid-Dec to early-Apr.
If you land in Feb, you will get 8-10 weeks of snow at most.
Book a 1-month rental, twice over, on Expedia, etc.
Saalbach is louder. Hinterglemm is quieter.
Saalbach is good for a season if you are an intermediate skier and a bit old (>30).
If you are an expert skier, then look elsewhere. Like Verbier or St Anton.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Whitegold,
Lol. Once again I would like to point out I prefer your quirky one word answers much better (even more so when they’re completely inappropriate).
But over 30 a bit old?
With that attitude no matter how old you are now you’re soon going to have yourself pegged as geriatric.
OP - sorry for the thread drift.
Saalbach sounds a fine place to be for a couple of months.

Saalbach is a fantastic place for a season. However you are leaving it pretty late and will miss some great conditions in January. I would say Maishofen is to far and it's gojng to cost you a huge amount in Taxis to get about. Try and find somewhere within easy walking distance of Saalbach centre. I stayed on the main road to Hinterglem, about 15 min walk away, I would not wahtbto be any further out.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@landlockedpirate, Good advice, unless the OP will have a car, in which case Maishofen to Saalbach (or the Schoenleitenbahn) wouldn't be too bad - 10 mins or so? Much may depends on the nature of the job and where it is.

Why Saalbach? (not because I want to knock the place ) I ask because if you are only arriving in February then there might be better places with longer skiing seasons. Assuming you either have a job or have friends there sure you will have a good time. In all resorts many of the people who work there will live in nearby villages and towns (its cheaper). There will be a Postbus between the villages in the valley and Zell but it probably doesnt run too late into the evening so not good for any apres activities or if you are working in a bar. As to finding accommodation try contacting the local tourist offices, each of the villages will have one.

There is a bus service that continues into the evening, after the ski buses have finished. It's called the "Nightliner", and the timetable is downloadable from the Saalbach website. (https://www.saalbach.com/en/service/info/skibus-nightliner)
