Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skins - Compression tights not Back Country

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Good Morning all,
I do a lot of running in all conditions. When on the trails in winter, I wear Skins compression tights. Read all the benefits, reviews, etc. I just find them comfortable and, more importantly, warm when blowing a blizzard on the moors. Anyway, I am skiing over New Year and usually put on an old pair of tracksuit/jogging bottoms under ski pants. I am thinking about wearing my Skins under ski pants this year. So here is the question:
1) Is there any warnings, health issues, problems with wearing these types of clothing for long hours? Presumably I get first lifts (most days) and ski until dusk (every day) and then go out Apres Ski (every day) straight from slopes until going to bed anytime between 9 and 2am.

I am wondering if any of you wear them.
Thanks in advance

I would have thought they’ll be infinitely more comfortable and functional than old jogging bottoms. I can’t see any issue, you’re exercising after all....

I wear Under Armour Cold Gear under my ski clothes during each day's skiing and straight on to Apres and don't have any problems. You'll b fine.

No issue whatsoever. It's usually recommended that you sleep in them too if you want maximum recovery benefit. They sell a different version for sleeping in but I think that's overkill. I've worn them for donkey's years and usually sleep in them too for the first week or so that I ski.

As it happens, I do have two different pairs these days but that is because my current boots are so tight around the ankle, the full length Skins seam cuts into me under the pressure. So I now ski in a 3/4 length Skin and wear a full length pair for evening/sleeping in.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Excuse my ignorance - But why do they get slept in?

I can't imagine wearing anything (well, other than undies - though I do wear compression undies mainly for the sweat wicking ability of them) under my ski trousers - I run hot though.

That said I've worn cold compression gear (couple of brands, mainly UA and Subsports (actually prefer SS, pricing is cheaper and quality is excellent)) long pants - and noticed that they started to bunch up on my shins which made my boots uncomfortable... might be something to bear in mind/see if you can get 3/4 length ones.

Other than that, I wear them all day / sometimes into the evening when skiing - and I'm still around Smile

I used to wear 2xu thermal 3/4 length - they were great but as I got fitter they were just too cold. Tried Skins but found they weren't breathable enough, ended up feeling v clammy. with GTX shell trousers

Same reason you wear them during the day - the compression forces more blood through the muscles and speeds up recovery.

The logic for a special sleeping pair is that the compression should be a slightly different amount and/or zoned differently for maximum benefit. If you saw how the overall design has changed over the years, though (I've been wearing them since they first appeared maybe 15 years ago and have had at least 5 pairs) then the right amount today is the wrong amount tomorrow so it's a bit of a gimmick to have a different pair I think.

I do believe it makes a difference in recovery to wear something though. I always seem to ache less when I've slept in them from when I haven't, at least until I get my full ski legs back. For the OP as a fell runner it might make negligible difference but for an aging desk jockey like me it helps.

I wear compression tights all day to ski and, like others, occasionally at night. Brilliant things. My physio calls them boil-in-the-bags. wink

@Raceplate

Thanks for the explanation, as a fellow "aging desk jockey" I may have to get a pair!

I wear Skins for skiing, they sell them in Snow & Rock (or they did when I bought mine anyway)!
