Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing in early December

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi,

I got tempted by, and have booked, some cheap flights to Salzburg at the start of December.

Are there any ski resorts that will probably have some runs open and is easy to get to/from using public transport?

There is a suggestion of some snow and cold weather for the eastern alps over the next couple of weeks so I guess most places will open on time (bigger places from about 30/11) . Kaprun as already mentioned is open on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Obertauern is usually good for early or late season but as it has been so dry not sure it will be any better than elsewhere. Schladming often hosts an early ski race. All the big resorts have extensive snow making so they will make every effort to "open" on the advertised day. Personally I would wait, maybe until the day before your departure to decide, I cant see accommodation being an issue.

Practically everywhere in Austria is accessible using a combination of train and bus see https://www.oebb.at/en/ to get connections. There are regular buses between Salzburg airport and the Hauptbahnhof.

Hintertux/Mayrhofen maybe but there will be masses of accommodation avail everywhere so you can easily wait until near departure day to decide.

Thanks, good to know as a friend is thinking of going. Never can be too sure esp when they use opening dates with "voraussichtlich" on some sites.
