Just realized, that Spyder from this year is selling their higher end products with Gore-tex, instead of their own previous membrane that was always claimed to be way above Gore-tex, with 30,000/20,000 claimed water resistance and breathability... Interestingly these numbers are not listed anymore for any of the products that have the gore-tex lining...
I just received my second warranty replacement Monterosa jacket, as first one just soaked through as a T-shirt, the second one had misconstructed inner cuffs that were too short, so would cut off circulation if thumb was inserted, and front pocket with the waterproof zipper would still soak through and bit of leaks on the sides as well... The new arrival feels very different, doesn't look anything like the previous ones in terms of appearance - but hopefully more water resistant with the Gore-tex... really shocking given the price tag of these products, but have to give credit for their warranty department...

@szladob, IM(lessthan)HO, Spyder retail is no better than Spyder knockoff. I've had three Spyder products from pucka retail sources and to be honest they're little if any better than the discount dealers. More than 90% of the gear we buy is produced in big overseas factories. It's very improbable that the same production lines have vastly different QA standards, nor that modern synthetic materials are vastly different in performance. I've a Walmart $38 down jacket that so far is waterproof, windproof, seriously warm and . . . not sure yet how breathable. . . But jeez, an almost identical jacket in a specialist winter retailer near here is marked up at $235 with a 20% discount. . . WTF!
I look at it in this way, it's a dam sight cheaper and easier to toss a piece of performance clothing that doesn't measure up to our sporting needs, to Goodwill or Oxfam where it will keep someone warm this winter and then we test the next candidate. Play around with the cheap stuff, there are real gems out there and then give us your feedback.

Spyder gear is expensive and, to my eye at least, has a decidedly 80’s look to it. Similar to Bogner. For those who buy it, what’s the attraction?

My all black Monterosa jacket certainly doesn't have an 80's look at all.. I only ski on holidays these days, and I will try to stay out even if it snows, or snow/rains, thus wanted a jacket that doesn't get soaked in those conditions..

@BobinCH, Spyder gear isn't cheap but it wears better than most comparable brands IME. I had Spyder salopettes for about 15 years so looked no further when replacing them. My Degre7 jacket was shagged after only about 7 or 8 years so guess which brand I replaced it with?
A family friend has been wearing the same Spyder jacket for 18 years, the first 14 of which were spent wintering in Austria...
My sister gets whatever's cheap in TK Maxx and has new gear every couple of years.

Few things to consider here:
#1 Are Spyder jackets from 15-20 years ago comparable to ones of today, in terms of their manufacturing quality. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't but it may explain why the OP posters experience is different and/or the change to using Gore-tex
#2 How the punter uses the jacket and how they maintain it after sales can have an impact. How many people wear their jacket in really bad weather? How many wash and/or reproof their jacket? Again it could be the OP as different experiences on this basis as opposed to others.
#3 What is better value for money. A jacket that costs £100 and needs replacing after 8 years or a jacket that cost £300 and needs replacing after 18 years. Prices and longetivity could be the other way round. It's just the principle of how you judge what is worth the money I am driving at.

I'd rate Mountain Equipment highly for membrane jackets. Then again, I have a 31 year old Berghaus Gore-tex still in use as a sea fishing jacket.

@Scarpa, With you on that. This will be my third season for my ME Drylite jacket, which is absolutely fine despite being less than half the price of a Goretex equivalent. I have a 20 year old Goretex paclite (2 layer), but it's relegated to climbing use as the sleeves always wet out

My Degre7 cost £400+ and I was disappointed it didn't outlast me! I prefer it when friends wear the same gear year in, year out so I can recognise them on the hill from afar - I am as blind as the proverbial bat and I think I'm missing the recognition gene to boot

is that it gor a lot of use for 4-5 months every year so it is very hardwearing and still looks good. I'm not keen on Bogner - too blingy

I reckon any shell that is still at all useable after 20 years is doing OK, especially something like paclite which is hardly bulletproof!

@jedster, That probably sounds better than it is – more like 5 years abuse and then 15 years of shoving it in my backpack if it looks a bit cloudy. I don't generally go out climbing in the rain anymore, and replaced it (probably 15 years ago  ) with another, more gently treated paclite! Neither would stand up to skiwear abuse, though, but are a bit lighter in the bag on a summer hike.

I see Spyder is advertising a new material developed by Gore-tex that they will be using and called “Pow Pow”. Supposed to be stretchy and soft.

I was just recently thinking how pleased I am with my Arcteryx jacket, the most expensive I've ever bought in 2008, still going very strong and skiied in all weather and all temps from -20 to +20! Had a minor issue with the glueing of the "guide" for the drawstring coming loose in 2015, fixed under warranty
