Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving in Borovets, Bulgaria

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We're considering going to Borovets in Bulgaria in January 2020, which will be our first visit to the country so our knowledge is a little sparse. It would be nice to have the flexibility of having our own car and the hire prices are very cheap there. However, does anyone have any experience of driving in this area at that time of year?

Are there places worth visiting nearby? Are the roads ok to drive on? I've read about potholes and I have no idea what kinds of roads lead from Sofia airport up to the resort.

We are considering Hotel Lion, which is a little out of the centre. If we were feeling lazy and drove to the slopes, is there somewhere to park?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

stayed in Borovets a few times and have walked past the Lion ..it looks ok from the outside but it is a bit out of town ,,15 mins walk but all the hotels on that strip usually have a bus to and from the lifts..I never felt the need to have transport as there is not much near there ..the roads .. as I remember..it is about 6 years ago ..are reasonable ...its an ok place to have a holiday ...with skiing ..conditions can be very variable

Rila monastery is about 2hrs away & sapareva thermal pools betwen them both.
The drive is better & safer now the EU funded motorway is done.
Still mad Fitzwilliam drivers though.
