Poster: A snowHead
|
I have an opportunity to join a group of lads for a long weekend in Les Gets in mid-March, this would be my 4th trip for the forthcoming season.
I'm a bit concerned about the low altitude of both the village as well as the mountains in the PdS ...
I am expecting spring snow (which I really enjoy) but what I don't want to find is bare slopes and closed runs.
Am I being too pessimistic?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

It's usually ok mid march, like most areas if it gets really warm it can get more slushy/sticky at lower elevations but you often get some snowfall around that time.
Don't think it'll give you great concern. Nice area to ski also, not severe but alot of cruisers in that sector of Pds. Decent altitude in Avorias sector with plenty to ski even if snow levels are lower.
We've been to France mid March for many years as the conditions for us are always good.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

March in Les Gets is much safer for snow that Dec./Jan.
There was still plenty of snow in the Morzine/Les Gets area in mid-April this year.

Les Gets slopes are on pasture, so you need only about 10cm snow depth.
Mont Chery is a really nice spot in spring conditions.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've skied Les Gets in march for the last 7 years (5 of them living here) and there has never been a problem with pistes being closed. Even the horror season of 16/17 the pistes were open until the start of April. As WindOfChange said, we don't need much snow depth as we're on grassland and the preparation of the pistes is top quality.

yep March 18 was probably exceptional in that it stayed cold for so long and the base was still over 1m, but March 17 also started with a series of dumps....this was my mates car on the 7th, after we had cleared it all off around midnight. But it warmed up quickly that year and was slushy by mid month. Still it's normally a great month to ski there, the big crowds have gone (easter not til 21 Apr), plenty of snow cover on piste and a good chance to strike it lucky.

One thing to be aware of is that the first week of march is still high season
