Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just went sking (from the lift, to the Grande Ourse, and down to the lift again...) Snow was actually really good on Mt Chery on the only piste I skied (the shame!) Tandoori Pizza at the Grande Ourse was spectacular. Heads up for anyone in Les Gets, they do their whole roast pig every Sunday.

Unfortunately it was just a dusting. Arrived about 10 and skied until about 3. The pistes that were open were in quite good condition, the pistes that were closed were closed for very good reasons. Skied all around the Les Gets area. Tulipe was stunning apart from a little thin at the bottom. Chamossiere / Arbis was also great apart from a little icy on the last pitch.

This has to change by friday when i arrive - right now forecast say 40 cm of snow by then. Will i make a big difference to the skiing, or are more needed ?

@Timc, agree about Tulipe..skied it a couple of times today and loved it. As you say just pick your spot near the bottom.

@DanishRider, it's very cold, there's snow on the piste, about 30cm due this week, you'll be fine. Honestly the pisteurs in Les Gets are amazing and our lack of rocky slopes means they don't need much white stuff to spread around.

Will report back - have been a season regular in Ischgl, so have much love for Austria, but have spent quite some time in France too - PDS seems to be more “austrian” when looking at the height and layout - I am really looking forward to the it. It is a nice change from the Tarantaise resorts Happy i guess that housing is cheaper there too?

@MeMyselfandI, Since being local, what are your opinion on 30 cm snow - will it make a great difference ? What is the best site for checking the weather in the area? What are the chance of needing chains on the car (know the legal part, so have them in the car), cause last year in Les Sybelles, 5 cm snow was equal to chains!

@DanishRider,
I don't think there will be 30cms.
Any snow will be welcome though. The lower slopes are all man made at the moment. Every day they seem to open another piste or two with artificial snow. They're doing a good job under the circs.
The higher, non artificial, pistes will at least be refreshed as will the skiable off piste. Despite what you might read on here, it's all very hard and icy. Not many locals are even bothering to ski. But then we have a choice.
Prices are expensive. It's proximity to Geneva make it a popular choice for second home owners.

Makes sende with the prices. Looking at yr.no, they claim 30-40 cm’s on Tue/wed - i hope i am lucky Happy

Chamonix meteo is one of the best options for “local” weather. 30cm would transform the area, but unlikely to be that much on Tues/Weds.

Skied at Super Chatel today and all the pistes that are open are in pretty good condition. The pisteurs have done a great job under the circumstances and I've skied on a lot less at this time in previous years. We'll have to wait and see what the next couple of weeks brings in terms of the real stuff.

@DanishRider, The following is a good snow report / forecast site for Chatel which extends to the PDS and updates multiple times daily. You should be very pleased with the ski area and the villages.

Quick update for those interested in Les Gets area. So far have only skied the latter part of yesterday afternoon. Snow conditions not as bad as I thought they were going to be. Clearly the cannons have been going (and on now as I write). Les Gets bowl area was very nice in places but did have icy/bear patches to keep you on your toes. The red down (Sautenaille) from Ranfoilly was very lovely in places and quiet too although we were approaching last lift time. Was expecting the home run back to Les Gets to be a nightmare but No! We took the Golf route via the tunnel and it was great. Worse part was the last piste down to the chair - busy and icy with a dusting of artificial snow. Weather glorious, bit chilly but it’s January so what can you expect. Finished with a couple of beers in Barbylon! Going to check out the Morzine side (off Folliets) today. Enjoy everyone. Very Happy

Thanks for the update. Will be in les gets in 4 weeks so watching this with care!

@DanishRider, it'll make a difference, there's a frozen base on most slopes so that should allow a full opening. Today's report saying between 25 and 35 cm on accuweather, chamonix meteo saying 20-25cm. There will be something, then hopefully more next week

Currently sitting at the top of la charniaz after skiing chamosserie and most of the nyon area. Good morning skiing in the clouds. It is what it is and if you’re already booked it’ll still be a decent on piste trip.

Decent despite the condition, We’re having great fun.

Please don’t tell anyone but the piste conditions are really quite good. Arbis started the morning in stunning condition apart from skiers left on the last pitch and was still great at 4:00pm. Tulipe was great all day. There was some visibility issues with transitioning through a cloud layer. Plus it is so quiet lifts and pistes to yourself. There are still some issues with pistes not being open mainly on the morzine facing side of pleney.
If off piste is your joy then there isn’t any, not even side of the piste.
Some idiots decided to attempt the closed black Yeti which looked tempting after an inch of snow last night had covered the rocks, tree stumps and ditches. A couple came to serious grief.

Last week I was at the bottom of Chavannes collecting #1 from e360 classes. Hero Dad tries to ski across the ever so lightly covered ‘piste’ which was basically soil and rocks coloured white. He did about 8 feet and the. Epic superman straight into a load of small children Very Happy

Cracking day. Although mainly man made, now the holiday hordes have gone they are not being scraped back to the base. Did most of what was open Morzine,LG side. A couple of thin bits and a few rocks but the nicest snow of the season so far.
Looking forward to the real stuff now, not looking forward to digging out the chalet steps

First burn around Avoriaz for a couple of weeks. Conditions improving by the hour. Let’s hope the heavy stuff sets in again tonight as forecast and tomorrow should be a belting snowy mountain day

Yeah. It's made a wee bit of a difference. In fact call it a complete and utter transformation. There's been a very decent fall in town and I'm sure by the time it stops there will be 50cm in Avoriaz. It was awesome up there today, fresh tracks all day. Until later this afternoon it was falling on light winds, and its also cold fluffy and dry snow. You will have a very good time whatever resort you chose.

I'll be arriving in Avoriaz on Saturday for a week. From the conditions and forecast I'm thinking of leaving the fattest skis and airbag at home but will enjoy the refreshed pistes. is this overly pessimistic?

@On the rocks, Difficult to say, but I would say that a snorkel might not be needed. We've skied side off piste today on soft snow in Super Chatel which was fun and the snow is definitely building but not exactly freeride conditions. We're due another few cm this evening and perhaps another 10/20cm on Sunday/Monday.
