Possibly not one for the purists, but having just spent a couple of tedious hours in MK, noticed that M&S are selling what is essentially base layer, at around £10-15 quid a bit. Looks ok, suitably warm (kind of like Damart).
OK, probably won't breathe as well as the more usual makes, but at that price (compared to £60++ for Icebreaker or £35 for Patagonia) can't go wrong !

Try a T-Shirt, they've worked for me since day dot! Try Asda you can pick one up for around £1.99. If it gets colder I just put more layers on. Don't get sucked in with the salesman pitches for all of the new gear, most of it's cowdoo! Though everyone I ski with take the p*** and say I'm tight........isn't that rightSteveKirby, anyone would think we're all on expeditions to the North Pole if you listened to the 'experts' advice.

Grimsby Ranger, I've heard that you could peel an orange in your pocket?
Long sleeved 'Boston' wicking base layers from Decathlon (see the running section) for under £9. The short sleeved versions are even less. I've used them for a couple of years & they're excellent.

Old M&S t-shirts work for me, Take 6 and change every day. They count as 'free' 'cause I don't wear them for anything else. Never been cold yet (although last year at la Thuile the chairlifts got a bit nippy)

i'd spend money in this order,,
1. boots
2. goggles/glasses
3. jacket
4. sallopettes (dayglo all in one for your skier types )
5. skis/board
6. good quality beer.. (move this up to 2. if theres a white out or no snow)
7. food
8. socks
9. i suppose yu'd better have somewhere to stay!
10. through to 50. some other stuff
51. expensive 'wicking layer'

I buy and wear "expensive" base layers, Helly wool/poly combos, patagonia , berghaus, and Icebreaker. Why ? Cos they are very comfy and I don't end up soaked at the end of a days exertions on skiis and I am warm & dry wether skiing or sitting in a chairlift or restaurant. Over 10 years ago I was climbing in scotland with my wife and a friend who owned a moutaineering shop. After a while my wife complained of being cold. She told us what layers she had on - one of them was a cotton sweatshirt which was wet from sweat - my mate persuaded her to take of the sweatshirt and let her thermals and fleece layers work - result she wasn' t cold any more all day. If you are using cotton as a base layer try not using it one day when you are out ( you could always roll a t-shirt into a jacket pocket if you want to take it with you as backup) see if you are colder or warmer without the cotton base layer. Cotton has no functional use as a base layer, once it is wet from sweat it just conducts heat away from the body. Buying a base layer need not be expensive - some of the links in this thread show that. The top stuff has great odour resistance so you can get away with a couple of tops for a week.
Its one of those things that until you try, you never realise what a difference it makes. If you have gone to the expense of a breathable jacket/slopettes you may as well fork out £20 quid for thermals. Whats the point of the breathable technology without them? It can't breath if you are trapping all your moisture next to your skin

I reckon it depends on how much you sweat. I need these wicking layers as I generate a lot of heat and sweat when I exercise. A mate of mine doesn't and he sticks to cotton t-shirts. Last skiing trip I had to buy some cheapo salopettes (as I'd forgotten my goretex trousers) and they were a nightmare on my lower back where the salopette comes high. I had a lovely wet patch which felt cold and clammy. Wicking base layer didn't help me there. Not sure of the point of this post of mine actually

M & S thermals really great. I bought some (not the lacy variety, but the other ones) & they are warm & wicking. Also wash & dry overnight, so one set works all week!

For me Icebreakers are worth the money. Recently I forgot to pack my usual microfleeces so I only had the icebreaker and a fleece and a shell in -10.
Toast....!!
