Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Resort for cheap 1:1 lessons?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello folks - unless I'm being dim I couldn't see an intro thread so may as well say hello here.

This query sits half way between this thread and the 'bend zee knees' section, so hope I've picked the right one.

I've been skiing since I was a tot and was pretty good once upon a time. But my trips over the last 15 years have been pretty sporadic and, while I can still keep up with the young'uns, I've noticed that my technique has become embarrassingly lazy (think bolt-upright, half asleep).

After a few recent changes, I'm now lucky enough that I can start thinking about a couple of trips a year, but beforehand I'd like to have one trip where I just go back to school. As I travel alone, I tend to be a tag-along on ski trips so, rather than disrupt everyone else, I thought I'd have one trip on my own where I do nothing but full-day 1:1 lessons for a week... which can get pretty pricy.

So, I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on a resort where the cost of 1:1 lessons is lower than the norm (and ideally the name of a firm I can contact). From past trips, I'd suggest that France, Switzerland and Austria will be out from cost alone... but I've had some great weeks in Andorra (Pas) and Bulgaria (Borovetz) and loved how cheap everything was (passes, food, accommodation, etc) - I'm not at all fancy, so only interested in price, snow and quality of tuition - I'll sort out some basic accommodation/flights/transfers myself.

In package-holiday-firm terminology, I'd be 'advanced' as I can already go down anything relatively easily - so I'd be beyond just needing 'a few pointers' and more ready for a tutor with a bit of credibility who can push me on a bit. I know that my technique has gone out of the window, so I'd love to find either an independent tutor or a school that could take me back to what I was (and even further - never really done much off-piste work for example).

Any recommendations would be massively appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Welcome.

The only way for casual skiers to get good is to ski at least 2 weeks at a time.

The muscle memory needs 1 week to re-remember + 1 week to improve up a level.

If you want cheap, go (back) to Bulgaria.

If you want extensive trails to practise the tuition, go to France.

@gasket, rather than a week of 1-1 lessons, which apart from being expensive might get a bit intense, I'd recommend a week with one of the providers that specialise in ski improvement holidays. E.g. Snoworks are generally very well regarded.

Look at the Pre Season Bash (PSB) on here. Looks like it will be spread over two weeks, with the first week dedicated to instruction. snowHead

Bansko, about 70 eur for 2 h. Do 2h each mornings, practise rest of the day, next day corrections practise again and again

I've had excellent private tuition with Galli Fedele Scuola Italiana Sci in Livigno.

I paid 90 euro for a 2 hour private lesson a couple of seasons ago and couldn't recommend them enough.

Another budget option would be to do an all inclusive fully instructed week with UCPA, but I haven't got personal experience of this.

Definitely a good option. Firstly because you don't have to be skiing on your own. Secondly because the accommodation is very nice. Thirdly because it's usually exceedingly good value. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there's some top quality tuition at a good price.

UCPA (Action Outdoors is the UK agent) also seems to come highly recommended as good value, particularly if you're not fussy about where you're staying.

@gasket, check with BASI to see if they are still running Alpine Level 1 courses at the ChillFactore. They are not 1:1 but they are a very intense and could push you along enormously.

Probably too late for this year though.

@gasket, you could do much worse than these guys.......... http://www.insideoutskiing.com/holidays.html I have been on a couple of their coaching weeks, and would thoroughly recommend. Both of the proprietors are Snowheads.

@gasket, Welcome to SnowHeads. I run a ski school that does precisely what you are looking for. All our short break or week long courses are during low season weeks so are priced on the lower end of the spectrum. I would suggest that 1 on 1 lessons for longer than a few hours are counterproductive and you would get more from longer sessions in a small group setting with like minded skiers. Have a look at our skiing levels guide and then you could see which courses suit. http://www.insideoutskiing.com/level.html

@Timberwolf, Cheers for the shout out Smile Hope you are well !
