Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello,
I'm going on a three month trip to Argentina. Does anyone know of travel insurance companies that cover off-piste skiing, without a guide? I can't go with MPI Brokers as I'm not a UK/Ireland resident (French).
Thanks in advance

I just use standard travel insurance (packaged with my banking), combined with AssurSport annual cover. AssurSport cover if you want to check it out is organised by Assurmix: www.assurmix.fr

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hmm, actually reading the docs it's not 100% clear if the cover extends out of Europe (and I've never worried about it as all my sport activities are in Europe). The English docs are clearly a translation from French and so a little sketchy. Easy enough for you to check it out though.

Yeah, I've had a look at the French and it won't be enough to cover medical expenses out of Europe sadly!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Nope some of the wording on the site definitely implies the standard cover is Euro only. There are references to outside Europe on the paperwork though, so maybe it's just a premium uplift to extend to worldwide.

BMC - a few years since I skied off-piste, but I liked the level of insurance, the modularity, and the lack of weasel words.

Try CAF.

BMC is good (although not sure if available for non-UK residents). It's expensive though.
I made two claims that weren't strictly covered by letter of the policy and they paid out on both, over £3000 combined. I was injured while out there and they paid out on non-refundable heli and cat skiing that i'd no longer be able to do. I didn't actually end or cancel the trip, so strictly it wasn't covered under cancellation. Not really relevant to your question but it shows that they're hopefully not going to screw you over with the small print of the policy!
This was in early 2015 - there was a change of underwriter at some point, can't remember if it was before or after.

I would concur with trying the CAF. The Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) have worldwide (with a few exceptions like Antarctica) rescue insurance as part of the membership see http://aacuk.org.uk/p-mountain-rescue-search-insurance for details in English. I am sure if the CAF dont offer something similar you can join the ÖAV as I dont believe there any any residence stipulations.

I think I'll have to go with world nomads in the end as they're the only ones who seem to offer it with proper medical cost cover (not in Europe, so the fees won't be covered by the EHIC). Will try to find some other options, but seems to be the only one that works!
