Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Thorens Easter 19

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

As a family we generally ski in March somewhere relatively high and have always enjoyed cracking snow with the lower slopes getting slushy in the afternoons. This season we had a very early break and an Easter break and my word, what fabulous conditions. We had a day in VT and the snow was glorious, like riding on air. I appreciate we were so very lucky, or were we? Easter is a little later next year and whilst I appreciate the season in VT is long, does it get to the point in mid April that you can only ski half the day? Advice and expertise welcomed.

Thanks

S

You can ski all day. Just depends how slushy you can cope with. Groomers stay structured enough all day to ski albeit with slushy bumps. Some off piste can get totally isothermically rotted out.

@Snowtrain, In Tignes all summer you can ski in the morning and when slushy come down from the Glacier and either play a round of golf or spend the afternoon in the swimming pool ....

I think you could have an excellent week in VT next April. Was there last week and while it was slushy in the afternnoon an excellent skiing holiday was had. We had our leisurely lunch at 2.30pm then effectively skied home at 4.

Whilst the snow conditions were fab this year I have skied in Tignes end of April twice before and enjoyed the weeks with less snow but less heat so there was less slush in the afternoon.

Is that 'isothermically rotted out' off-piste that Dave of the Marmottes the stuff that I saw fellows almost disappear into like white quicksand? Shocked

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yup you go to make a turn and your edge just punches through and keeps punching until you're in up to you knees.

I've skied in Obergurgl, Cervinia & VT during the first week of April and whilst there's been a bit of soft snow we've always had a great time. No-one can guarantee conditions like this April but with Val Thorens you're pretty safe. Hope you have a great time.
