Can anyone recommend any? We have an 11 year old and 9 year old in the car so they need to be clean / suitable for smaller ears - although those ears will mostly have their own headphones in.

@breeze11, OK...we just go to the library and get a load of CD stories out - many of which I have enjoyed listening to as much as they have....

We have used the back catalogue of Wittertainment to keep everyone engaged for the 9-hour Summer trips from the Alps across to Hossegor.

Audible. CD books take up an awful lot of room. Terry Pratchett kids books are amazing for keeping them quiet.

joe rogan podcasts are awesome, although there is swearing and difficult subject matter sometimes. it depends how little you want them to hear i guess

+1 for getting CDs from the local library - which I have been known to rip into GooglePlay/iTunes so that I can carry them on my phone [ssshh! don't tell on me]
Favourites with my family are:
Mister Gum stories, read by Andy Stanton (author) - anarchic and very funny
Alex Rider stories, by Anthony Horowitz (I don't know who reads them) - sufficiently long to fill up most of the autoroute from Calais to Chambery.
Skullduggery Pleasant stories, by Derek Landy (I don't know who reads them) - there is a compilation of short stories ('Armageddon Outta Here') which is excellent, a mix of humour and (slightly) chilling supernatural. And spans so many CDs that it has outlasted several entire holidays.
I've been known to play out podcasts from BBC iPlayer - John Finnemore for comedy, various stories/dramas (there was a Neil Gaiman one a few years ago which went down very well), and The Archers but only if they have really p*ssed me off with their music; there is only so much Eminem and Beyoncé that I can cope with on a long drive.

If you are a member of your local library then you may also have access to free downloads with your borrower account. In W.Sussex this is through the 'rbdigital' app - may be different in different areas.

Infinite Monkey Cage for sciencey stuff that I can't understand but enjoy listening to.
Stuff You Should Know for interesting looks at pretty much everything (I usually just pick a selection from the back catalogue).
Both pretty much family friendly, the latter definitely so.

Takes me back! Think I actually read that one, but reminds me of all the Roald Dahl type cassettes that my folks would use to keep us quiet. At some point they also opted for Monty Python and Vivian Stanshall, although don't think they remembered that neither were particularly ideal for an 8 year old

I downloaded the RB Digital app. It links to local libraries (if your library subscribes) and you can access their audiobooks. We spent many hours driving around one summer listening to all the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Don’t bother with most podcasts. Most of them are far too dull. Talking books are definitely the way to go. You can get them from your library for free. CDs can be the easiest but do take up more room. Audible is fine and has a huge choice but isn’t cheap. Personally, I tend to use my library’s e-service where I can download them for free.

Radio 4 have just started broadcasting a new Hitchiker's Guide series based on the book 'And another thing' by Eoin Coffer. Only one episode in at the moment but would be a good listen if you can download/stream it.

Also if you're interested in action sports I can recommend the Looking Sideways podcast which has some great in-depth interviews with some key names in snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, climbing etc.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks and always have one going if im driving or travelling. For young kids I always recommend the Harry Potter series read by Jim Dale. I know most people have read the books but Jim Dale just brings them to life. I have many recommendations for adults but this is where I'd start with kids. Only thing I found was kids would rather listen to the audiobook than chat to their parents but maybe we're just boring For older kids and parents Ready Player One is an amazing story (fingers crossed for the film).

@HandyHand, that is a brilliant idea! I haven't heard the original HHGTTG since I was young myself, there must be a downloadable version somewhere, surely? I think it's time to inflict it on our children for the drive down. Goodness knows I loved it when I was quite small I think!
