Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Off piste in La Clusaz

 Poster: A snowHead

Hey everyone

Does anyone have any recommendations for off-piste in La Clusaz? I'm spending a week there in March with a mixed group of skiers and snowboarders...

Many thanks for any info you can give Smile

snowchica, yep, what he (SZK) said; that's your venue - pitches and runs of just about all shapes, sizes and steepness.

It's a favourite spot for the locals and with good reason. Fabulous off-piste arena when conditions are good. The upper section keeps the snow well and the off-piste is easily accessible and (generally) easy to bail out of if you're out of your depth. If there's good cover then the runs down to the car park are fun too, particularly "cutting the corners" through the trees beside the long winding blue.

But you absolutely must keep an eye on the avalanche risk and conditions (posted at the bottom of the La Balme chair) and don't even think of crossing into roped off sections; big (and fatal) slides are not unusual in the upper bowl... the local pisteurs are very knowledgeable and helpful so get their advice if in doubt... and re-check the conditions every time up as slopes that are safe in the morning often get roped off later.

...and be careful of cliffs if taking unconventional routes to the lower half of the valley (below the restaurant).

Sorry if that sounds a bit negative - it's a great place to ski! And you'll likely see some fairly impressive skiing from some of the locals; La Clusaz has quite a pedigree of home-grown champions.

For variety get the bus up to Le Chinaillon (top of Grand Bornand) and head up Le Lachat (a Black run, some small couloirs and a wide open pitch that are fabulous - and can avalanche - in fresh snow); and if feeling adventurous hire an instructor to take you "off the back" of Le Lachat Twisted Evil

Now, where's Mr Gravite? wink
