Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

This is sensible stuff - micro hydro is cheap, well proven technology which is 'renewable' and environmentally friendly. A constant power output - assuming we don't have another Ice Age. Wink
For a turbine the size in the article you don't really even need a dam. The intake only needs a screen in an existing pool then run a pipe downhill to give the required head. Makes far more sense than fooling about with wind turbines. The next step is to pump some of the outflow back up the hill for snow cannons then more runoff, then back up ........ perpetual motion. Cool

Here's an introduction to micro hydro for interested snowHeads. If anyone wants more, here's a complete portal on the topic.

Fascinating....and from our desert correspondent!

Can this be adapted for camels and oases?

Camels (like horses) are bigger than me and best avoided.
Oases - over-rated. I've yet to see a decent one outside of Bob Hope movies.

Almost on topic, Egypt has quite a large windfarm project near Hurgada (Red Sea). They are seriously considering a pumped storage scheme to pump sea water into an artificial lake in the mountains for use when the wind drops. We're not completely oil burning out here !! Cool

Camels look remarkably like giraffes (hence the name of giraffes in some languages - "camel horse" and similar), and both have the ability to go long periods without water, yet the two are quite separate in the animal classification tree (it's name escapes me).

My camel experience ended up with me sporting a huge 'greeny' on my back and a near kidnap experience. Sorry, 'off topic' but I hate camels and couldn't agree more with Kuwait Ian - steer clear of them!

hayley t, a girl in our Mountain Bike Club got a very nasty bite from one. Either that or the tetanus shot etc knocked her out for a day or two. Great beasts if you're a bedu. Otherwise ......... don't go there.

See what you've started DG Cool See my sig.

kuwait_ian, Still off topic....once (many years ago before we discovered skiing) Mr HH & I made the mistake of taking one of those camel tours. The camel behind us - bad breath and all - took an instant dislike to Mr HH and spent the whole afternoon trying to bite his arm/head off! Shocked Much to the dismay of the poor couple riding it who were scared to death everytime it made a charge. Eventually the camel herder gave Mr HH a stick to wave at it which kept it at bay but I'm never going anywhere near the things again!

On Topic, more about the Snowmass micro hydro. With costs and payback info. It's even cleverer than we realised - it uses the same pipes as the snow making system. Brilliant.

Is 6-10 years' payback the norm on these, or are they being exceptionally clever?

They've been clever in not having to buy or lay any pipe so I'd guess a full installation elsewhere would take a little longer. But since there is no ongoing fuel cost and minimal maintenance even a few years longer wouldn't affect viability.

Here's some data on a mini hydro (actually it's quite big) in South Africa which pays back in 8-10 years on 16% interest rate.

Not everything is sweetness and light in Snowmass according to this article. Eco friendly generation on the one hand but a major new development on the other. A more +ve view of the development from the Aspen Times
