Slalom ski advice

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,
I'm 55 y old, 190lb (85kg), 6'2"(185cm), expert level ,momentarily not fit at all.

Looking for advice about slalom ski that is able to skid, drift and (god forbid) maybe even moguls.
I ski since 3 years old, and never had problem with different conditions type of terrain...etc, and all that with "technicaly inferior"straight and later semi carve ski's. But todays ski's are making it very difficult cause they are so narrowly specialised....and I call them "one trick pony". Last slalom ski that I was still happy with was Volkl P40 Race SL. Nowdays slalom ski requires freshly and perfectly groomed, and anything other than that (forget afternoon skiing) they are not fun to ride and rather unusable in different conditions.

So please, I would really appreciate advice about slalom ski that is versatile enough for all snow and terrain conditions, can skid ,drift and maybe even......moguls. Those variable radius ski category are not good for tight fast slalom turns(have tried). Also by default FIS is out.

Again, I'd appreciate you'r experience's about versatile slalom ski.

Thanks in advance,
Jake

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
I have a Slalom ski that does a lot of what you want, but it's the Atomic SL11 from 2004...where the profile isn't as shaped as SL skis are now (108-63-96), so it doesn't lock as dramatically into a carve as a modern one.

I suspect you will be hard pushed to find a current Slalom Ski to do all that you want.

You might look at something like Head Magnum, or Dynaster Speed Zone 12, which should be a bit more versatile....or if you want to go wider at the waist for more versatility, Head Titan.

No use in VERY short turns. Bg GS turns magnificent, and in the crud, and slop at the end of a day.

Guilia on Rossi Héroes 50 turns on steep slope.
PaulC1984 on Head WC rebels 50 turns.
Me on Kastles 30 turns.

Kastles in the crud great. Depends what you want. Happy

That will be a problem. I need a time machine and new ski from early 2000's. Yep, that Atomic has about same vaist line as my Volkl SL had.
Do not understand today's dictatorship trend.....either you gona carve on the radius we have decided is best for you or......quit skiing

@Skizuber, seriously, from what you ask here and elsewhere you are not looking for a slalom race ski.

Short radius piste ski maybe. Head SuperShapes get well reviewed. Stockli SCs maybe. Volkls new Code S maybe interesting or next year’s Salomon Labs. https://www.voelkl.com/en/products/skis/code-s/

And no expert I know (WC racers, trainers, guides) calls themselves an expert.

Thanks for advice. I did look at those you mentioned but raduis/es seemed to big. I do only SL very short turns 99% of the time. Basicaly any SL ski that is more or less forgiving and has decent skiding ability will do ok.
In any personal conversation I wouldnt call myself anything else than "skier" but for the purpose of pinpointing skil level ( beginner/intermediate/advanced/expert) I HAD TO so I can get advices in that direction. I dont understand why you have a problem with that

@under a new name,
Hey, this is not a wee wee... contest. But info/help/advice forum.
For example: Right now I have 2017/18 Fischer RC4 WC SC (165). Excelent ski but needs to be on edge all the time. Somebody told me that same ski 2016/17 model is a tiny bit softer but can even skid and is easier to ski all day, more versatile.
But I cant find it and test it. So,am trying here before buy new one

Ha ha ...P40 was retired10 years ago. Yes, longer radius and much longer ski wich helped a lot in all snow/piste conditions. I tried some longer GS skis but edge hold was not allowing any short turn.
So , again ....which SL ski is good for all day, all snow/piste conditions? But it has to be upper range ski. I am big and heavy enough and dont wanna hurt myself on weak ski

The best I can come up with is the Atomic Redster S9.....It's a recreational Slalom ski, for Advanced and Expert skiers, with a light playful nature (for a Slalom Ski). https://shop.atomic.com/en-gb/products/redster-s9-x-12-tl-aa3234.html

This review: " Few skis matched it in sheer fun. I think the main thing that impressed our testers was its versatility. Many technical skis are one-trick ponies that want to make one turn and one turn only, but the S9 did pretty much anything that was asked of it."

@Skizuber, imho it sounds as tho you don’t want a softer ski but one with less torsional rigidity.

Any lower end slalom would work, eg stockli SC as above.

Mind you, you could just ski current style...

What about this: https://www.proskilab.co.uk/h/men-s-slalom/ski-reviews-2018-elan-slx-fusion/530
and https://yellowgentian.com/ski-reviews/piste/elan-slx-fusion
"But the most important change is that the extremely angular tail has gone. That means that a sliding turn is possible as well, which makes this ski so much more accessible to a wider public."

(Head WC Rebels - "Overall, it’s a good slalom type leisure ski that we recommend for intermediary to good skiers looking for comfort rather than pure performance.")

@under a new name,
Yes, am doin' new style but simply dont like it Wink . I like using all slope shapes to ski around/ above them and radius /edge is limiting factor. Have to jump or slide to many times in order to go where I want and not where ski wants.
What do you think/know which higher end store model/s has least torsional rigidity and releasing edge more easily? New Fischer SC is not it. Have tried softer, lower end and felt like I had tooth picks underneath me, too unstable.

@Skizuber, Skis like the Fischer WC SC have a smaller sidecut radius than race SLs, I feel that anything under 12m means that the amount you might angulate to make a particular turn shape doesn't match the amount you want to angulate to balance out the turning forces. I don't find FIS SLs tiring and use them all day but I guess I am fairly fit.

My favorite bump skis are a pair of first generation Rossignol shaped SL in 177cm, they are about 20m radius which is similar to current competition bump skis.

Personally I love the Head iSL Rebels. Ive been on them in all conditions this winter and and the whole part they've been bang on. OK so in slush they are harder work, but in crud they are remarkably good.

Not sure they'd suit you mind as you mention being able to Tokyo Drift them, and they very much like to be on edge. 10.7m Radius in the 160cm I have is turny Happy. You also have to keep on top of them - you grin ear to ear with them, but they will spit you out if you aren't concentrating.

@Skizuber, There aren't that many recreational skiers who own pure SL skis and if they do, they are part of a quiver (so don't worry about versatility)....so personal experience is likely to be thin on the ground.

The best you are likely to get, is a list of the most accessible SL skis (from online reviews), which you can then try.

Current high performance Piste skis (some listed in posts above). should give you a lot of what you want.

@Skizuber, I see nothing wrong with calling yourself an expert. It is a proper appraisal of someone who has your experience.

I find it hard to Judge what is required because of the mix of terrain you require. For me, my new skis have improved me as an upper intermediate (I guess). However, someone with your skills will be able to ski anything on a SL ski. So I wouldn't be too worried.

If it were me. I'd probably go with the new Atomic rester or One of the Nordica Dobermanns. Widely available to test.
