Is it just me… ?
...Or was the BBC Winter Olympics anchor team just utter, utter, crap ?
Had I had fallen into a rabbit hole of despiration not even Kafka would have imagined ? why was it that every time I turned on it felt like being sentenced to an eternity of opening the door at 4 o clock to a Méribel chalet and being confronted by a table of wiimen of a certain type mindlessly gosiping over a vast array of empty cake plates. Trying to encourage paupers to engage (I mean lets face it Chemmy Alcott !?! or the queen of dogs Balding were not talking to thier PLUs?) because after all you don’t need money to slide, or even snow or so we are led to believe.
While the intention might be laudible the messenging was clumsy blunt, repetitive and ultimatly misguided coming from the those paticular cake holes.
Maybe spouting from a mouth that has sucked from the £28m teat might seem a little less overbearing.
Had the over paid Tamara’s in the BBC once given thought to the homophilly they project and keep perpetuating by their narrow choice of cookie cutter presenters in the same old tiresome surroundings then we might not have had to yet again suffer the increasingly anachronistic turgid mire that not even the sender commentators could invigorate.
I guess there are only really two types of person attracted to winter sports, those eating cake over their Daily Mail in Méribel (thanks Prof) and the rest of the sliding world.

The Studio stuff was... oddish, but not unexpectedly so. The obsession with curling is a given after previous outings is expected, as is the in-depth analysis of the baggyness of snowboardwear. Being five and a half thousand miles away from the action didn't help.

yup,
you basically had experienced commentators with no experience of the sports/events with experienced olympians with no experience of commentating.
Saying that, I did enjoy the snowboard commentry from Sochi 4 years ago.

While I agree with the general drift of the original posting, could I correct a common error? The ski resort is Meribel - a mirabelle is a little yellow plum, commonly from Lorraine and Alsace, which makes a very fine tart.

I quite liked it, can't see the obsession with curling though.
Generally format was ok and liked the little summary segments at the end

The overly 'hip' language and propensity for 'like / you knows' got on my wick a bit but maybe I am showing my age? But seeing as they were having to do the daily round up from the UK, I thought they did well. Particularly liked the all female panel yesterday, seems that the BBC is trying to drag itself into the 21st century. Clare also really pushed and they ended up having quite a frank discussion on funding. Loved the final round-up piece as well.

I think he's suggesting that coverage was all a bit elitist and done for the jolly nice BBC types by the nice BBC types (probably true to an extent but unfortunately by virtue of not having much snow here winter sports are practiced more by a well off minority).
Posting does come across slightly misogynistic but homophobic

Their tactic of saying, "here is the result, now lets watch the highlights", was pretty stupid.
By chance I had a look at the BBCs "get inspired" for Snowboboarding.
"Is it for me?
Snowboarding will give you an adrenaline rush of speed and you can learn how to do tricks. If you like the cold and being outdoors - although there are indoor slopes all over the country - then give it a go."
WTF - why did they bother.

I think the thing I hate most about the BBC coverage of, well, almost everything these days, is their habit of having some idiot embedded in the audience prattling away to camera annoying everyone around. What little coverage I saw they did this a lot. It is the height of elitist arrogant nonsense.

I agree with most of the above (or at least everything I understand), BBC coverage was pants. Normally don't mind CB but maybe she should stick to horses and hiking round the Cotswolds.

+1.
The BBC coverage was absolutely dire.
They specialised in summaries which completely destroyed any emotion or tension in any event which didn't include Brits.
It felt like the daily round-ups and summaries had been written by people who didn't understand the events; had not even watched the relevant footage; and didn't give a damn.
Two examples
(1) Ester Ladecka winning the GS downhill - despite being a snowboard specialist. The best bit was.... ... Ladecka staring dumbfounded at the timing clock for a **full minute or more** at the end of the run, refusing to believe she'd won. It was her own stupefaction at the win that made it so human! What did the BBC summaries show? A quick snapshot of her finishing, and then a press conference.
(2) The awesome men's ice hockey final between Germany and OAR. In the final one minute of normal play, Russia scored and then.... just **10 seconds** later... the Germans equalised to take the match into extra time. What did the BBC report.? The Germans scored in the last minute. Completely missing the agony and ecstasy of two teams fighting for survival both scoring in the last minute of normal play.
Just gob-smackingly banal reporting.
Crap.

In the Balding Day-at-the-Games show, you've got 1 hour to squeeze in maybe up to half a dozen or more sports, including explaining what the Jeff is going on to the average Joe, a potted history of who's in with a shout, the 3 main medalists, British chances, and anything else interesting outside the top 3 that happened, plus a quick round the desk 'so what do you think?', so it's never going to be in depth analysis and mega-mo replays all round.
The late night stuff on Beeb was ok although did feel a bit like a budget offering (admittedly for me, was mainly watching the Warwood and Leigh, or whoever else from TeamGB was sniffing around the tea and biscuits) The bits I watched on Eurosport I found incredibly dry.

Can't say I was overly impressed with the chap in the bobble hat who presented the after-midnight coverage. Where did they get him from? The Blue Peter auditions? Not very impressive and struggling even to read the autocue.
Edit - just googled him, apparently he was on Blue Peter!

Surprised people could have much of an opinion tbh. All the events were on at silly hours. Only really got to see a couple of ends of Curling whilst eating cornflakes.
Next summer and next winter games will be silly hours too. And the Commonwealth Games which must be some time soon (I guess that'll be budget too).

Lets see who's in the running for 2026...
Sapporo, Japan; Hmm 3 Asian nations back-to-back?
Calgary, Canada; Must've finished paying off the '88 olympics
Sion, Switzerland; Home of the IOC and not hosted a games since '48
Stockholm, Sweden; Never hosted a winter games, and 8th most successful winter olympic nation, but is the appetite there to host?

Agree - he was terrible.
Completely out of his depth.
If I were a cynic I would have said that he was there because of the BBC's blatant positive discrimination policy.........

Regarding the coverage -- the beebs problem is that they are not the 'main' broadcaster, and have to do with the snippets fed to them by Eurosport
e.g. I couldn't find the whole Ester Ledacka Super-G run anywhere..

The BBC don't really touch winter sports, so anything that might have come across as patronising or even obvious (making the skiing largely about Lyndsey Vonn) was probably because the channel knows less than lots of the fans watching. At least Graham Bell didn't keep banging on about Michael Matt's brother...

The next one is in Beijing isn't it? Do they have ski resorts anywhere near Beijing?
I'm looking forward to the footie world cup in Qatar. Have they agreed on moving the tournament to Oct/Nov now? Playing footie at +50°C does seem a bit silly.

Hang on, hang on! Can we cut to the main point of the OP, please?! What's wrong with Meribel? (Sorry about the lack of accent) I'm going there tomorrow for the first time. Is there something I need to know? is Clare Balding going to be there? Do i need to quickly change my booking? help me out, people!

That's interesting. In Europe, only France TV were a main broadcaster outside of Eurosport. Coverage was still dire on France TV mind.

For me, the most enjoyable sports commentary around is what comes on the live YouTube broadcasts of the Henley Royal Regatta. Rowers talking about rowing for rowers. It's assumed that only those into the sport will be watching - there's no flannel for newbies. And they've got the drone for great overhead filming.

Wasn't overly impressed with the anchors at times and some of the link people they shipped out seemingly without an iota of a previous sports background. Must have been some real commentators wondering what they had to do to go.
But worse were the "highlights" on the iplayer. Tiny snippits of a few events put all over the place on the red button site and the website, with ridiculous banners over a fair bit of the action when it was happening and the pointless practice of putting the gold medal happening briefly at the start then going back in chronological running order. Whoever managed this obviously thought they were some social media god from its look and feel but the depth and legnth of recordings were pathetic, perfect for the twitter generation with the associated attention span. Bloody awful coverage after the fact.
Thank goodness I got the Eurosport player, for all its faults which are many, at least they had comprehensive and full events on demand.
