...Showing the dude practically riding into an avi cannon about five seconds before the pitch releases
Make of that what you will but I might be inclined to get all 8611 school teacherish about it...
Hmm, am I the only one wondering how you can get a build-up of snow severe enough to avalanche in an area which has a cannon to allow regular clearing of the build-up remotely?
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

@ousekjarr, was wondering that myself. Are these Gazex cannons effective under all weather conditions? How do they work if there is a storm blowing?

I wonder where it was - "Savoie" doesn't exactly narrow it down!
Tignes apparently.

@Steilhang, they pump out a cloud of gas and then ignite it, apparently inside the barrel. Unless there is a very strong wind blowing, it should work. If the wind is strong enough to prevent it from working, no-one should be up there. See http://www.tas.fr/en/products/avalanche-products/535-gazex-gazflex-en for details - the software animation shows three ticks at 0:52 for gas capacity, temperature and wind speed, so I would suggest that there is a maximum wind speed supported, but cannot find any details of what that is. They are very keen to claim 24x7 operation down to -30C, so it must be fairly high.

As a complete novice it seems like the avalanche was moving beneath a very hard top layer. Would he have been ok if he hadn't stopped?
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

My guess is that given the proximity to the piste the probability is that it is put in use when the snow depth becomes a danger to the piste if it slide.
The slide in the video doesn’t really look more than an over night 20/30cms and probably not sufficient to manage the snow even though it was released locally by the side slider.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Ok. Didn't realise that the gas mixture is exploded in the tube. I guess that would work under most conditions.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Looks like it could be above the Double M piste / Lanches chair out of Val Claret?
You know it makes sense.

It's definitely there. If you pause at 51 seconds, you can also see the Tichot lift in the distance.
