Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Why so expensive?

 Poster: A snowHead

I'm currently away with the wife and twins in a 3.5 star sc hotel in Mallorca, and it's lovely, the whole thing cost £1650 for a week.

So, not counting lift pass or equipment hire, why are skiing packages (Crystal etc) so expensive? Is this cynically meeting perceived expectations?

Because people will pay that price. Plenty of competition in the ski holiday market, from budget, to mass-market, to high-end; package and DIY. If a company is getting its price v. expectations wrong they'll not last long in the competitive market.

It's a demand thing. Where would you rather be malloca or a ski resort? It's not about what it cost to supply the service it's about what people will pay

My inner socialist is boiling mad right now!

Is this another cynical move - to keep the hoi polloi off the slopes? If it is, then it's failed, as, not only am i a member of the hoi, but i sleep by the bins of the polloi!

Ski season is three months, beach season is nine months ?, your skiing holiday is paying towards the off season.

I suspect winter holidays are genuinely more expensive to provide - more heating and lighting costs, snow clearance, longer transfer driver hours, things going wrong more often requiring contingency budget, indirectly contributing towards towards the cost of keeping a ski resort open in winter (e.g. village avalanche protection and management). Fixed cost of recruiting and sending staff out spread over a much shorter season. Plus all that stuff about much less competition and the price people are prepared to pay. Out of interest how much roughly do Crystal charge for an equivalent winter holiday in a 3.5 star sc hotel mid-season?

Are we comparing like with like here? So many factors it seems almost an impossible comparison to make.

I've just looked at Crystal's website. A week in Italy, half board, 3 star hotel, including flights and transfers, mid season, starts at 549 per head. Not that different really and you could probably book late and get it even cheaper.

Economics. The market dictates the price, they will charge what they can get away with. It isn't a rip-off as nobody is forcing anyone to pay these prices - the consumer has the choice to pay or walk away. Simple really.

@Mr.Egg, I'd consider the school Easter holidays to be mid-season (even tending towards low), taking mid to be mid-price rather than middle-of. So NY, half term etc are high season, last 3 weeks Jan are low season etc.

I have kids and go Christmas (or the one before) and when they break in the Spring. Neither particularly expensive. New Year week and the Feb Half Term seem to be the most expensive.

Magaluf etc maybe downmarket, but Cala D'Or is really nice (everything shuts at midnight!).

It appears, as i suspected, that it's an exclusivity thing - would anyone be bothered if they made it cheap enough for the huddled masses to go skiing?

Supply and demand

Spanish costas - cheap land, cheap building costs, many many hotels etc all competing to have their slice of tourist Euros

Alps - geographically constrained, land often in the hands of a few owners (farmers) who are also hotelliers etc. Limited building season, limited peak season to make real returns.

If you could easily build towns the size of Spanish beach resorts in the Alps then you might have a bit more parity but you can't.

It isn't. Or at least the basics aren't...

You can fly or drive to the alps for similar (pro rata) the costs of anywhere.
You can get cheap self catering accommodation through to 5* luxury the same as anywhere else.
You can eat for not much more than you would in any holiday destination,

The added costs then come from:

Lift passes
Clothing
Equipment buying or renting
Extra insurance for the activity you are doing
Tuition in the early stages especially to be able to do the activity

You'd really need to compare it to something like a diving, surfing or sailing holiday in summer to get a reasonable comparison.

...and that's 1/2 board whereas the Mallorcan comparison is self catering. Given all the economic reasons raised by others, maybe the question should be why are ski trips so cheap?

Does the £1650 include food and drink for the entire week or just the flights/transfers/accomodation??

You're going to the wrong places.

I've stayed in some beautiful 3* pensions in Italy on a B&B basis for less than the cost of your pizza.

For every overpriced, 'exclusive' resort there at least half a dozen cheaper alternatives nearby.

Many reasons I suspect, mostly it comes down to the old supply/demand thing, if people are willing to pay £2k each for a week of skiing then why charge £750? It's also significantly easier to build and supply a hotel in Mallorca than up a mountain and there are surely significantly fewer places to stay for skiing than beach holidays?

No.

No one would be bothered. Skiing is not a social welfare.

"Anyone" will only "make it cheap enough" to make a profit.

If the huddled masses can afford that price, they go skiing. If not, only the hoity-toity will go.

If YOU can make it cheaper and STILL make a profit, YOU should make it happen to benefit the huddled masses. If not, shut up and pay the price.

Now hold on old chap, I'm not actually suggesting that we should encourage the poor (probably brexit voting, ignorant, xenophobic cousins of ours) to go skiing. OBVIOUSLY skiing should be placed at a price point only open to 'those who can'.

Mallorca is also only for 'those who can'! Only you classified '£1650 for a week' as the "huddled masses" doesn't automatically make it so.

This year i went to california (san fran & travelled around a bit).
Maybe compare to what you spend on ski holiday compared to what summer holiday you could have for the same price.
My other half isnt fussed on a snow holiday & im not fussed on a beach holiday, so we tend to comprimise.
