@davidof, I don't think twice in 14 years could be classed as an affinity. Could it just be because I look at Le Dauphiné website occasionally?

I haven't searched the archives but I remembered you'd posted a similar accident from the same area not so long ago.

Sounds very similar to the young British boy falling off the cliff near Flaine lake a few years ago, leaving the piste and going through the woods at the end of the day
Very very sad and hope the other child recovers from their injuries.
@davidof, does not really matter who posts does it?

@davidof, I’m really not sure why you’re highlighting this. Hells Balls posts lots of news items over the years. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed an affinity to such tragic issues.

I just noticed the story was similar to that of a nearby Flaine incident that Hells Bells also posted.

Terrible. Although if I've read the location correctly, it's hard to end up on the edge of those cliffs by accident; you have to cross the main road up to Avoriaz for a start.

When kids ski off into trees - which they love - it can be hard to follow them, and with a few minutes they can get pretty far away from the slope on skis. This a reason why a lot of parents are interested in some sort of tracking device.

Does anyone know the area of the accident well?
I mean, how did 2 kids BOTH fall off the same cliff?

Avoriaz is basically at the top of a huge cliff, the Flaise (sp) area where there are some apartments and down towards the Prodains gondola are right next to them as another post said they are well fenced off but the nursery slope through the village runs very close to the edge.

@stevew,
That’s not the same area. They fell off in the Super Morzine area. No tracking device would have helped them.
It’s very icy at the moment and the terrain falls away towards the cliffs. I’m amazed one of them survived tbh.
Very sad.

Ok, not clear from what I read on that side but as you say the cliffs that side are as severe and really quite close to the right hand piste as you look down

I let my 10 and 13 year old daughters ski off together but the rules are they dont leave the pistes and only go between agreed lifts. They are advanced skiers. Im not sure id do the same with boys though tbh but its hard to say as im not in that situation. |
I do not treat my boys differently to my daughter. What is true is that the four of them matured differently, some were ready for certain responsibilities at a younger age than others. In general I did not let them off the leash skiing when they were 10, although my eldest boy could certainly have been trusted to stick to agreed areas/rules at that age and so would my daughter have been. The next down (boy) is sensible but a complete space cadet, so fine if he is with the others but not on his own. The youngest (boy) is completely fearless and very adventurous. I try and not let him out of my sight where there is any chance of "adventure" on the slopes.
This is a tragedy and the family are in my thoughts. There but for the will of god etc. With all the precautions and good decision making in the world, we all know that things can still go wrong with kids of that age. I am sure what happened will have been a complete freak accident and the parents took what they thought were sensible decisions.

Speculation, but if they'd come down the green Séraussaix piste from the top of Baron then they'll have gone under the road on the piste. From memory I think there are trees over to the right of the piste there, probably with tracks through them. If they'd gone in there and under the Séraussaix lift then maybe they'd have ended up at the cliffs there.

If we're talking "S-M side" rather than "Prodains side" I'd have to assume they skied across from the Folie and through the tunnel after the pistes had closed - at which point they'd have had to go around the piste closed barrier they put up before Serassaix doubles back on itself to the right. From there, all the way down to the Proclou/Serassaix chair base stations the skiers left, Prodains valley side it clearly ropes off with very regular 'danger of death'/fall' signs - and they'd have had to duck that rope too.
