Poster: A snowHead
|
I've just bought my first pair of skis, and was looking for a bit of advice about the best way to transport them when going by air.
I've looked at a load of ski bags, but they all seem pretty flimsy - and I'm worried that by the time they've been thrown about by baggage handlers at each end, my lovely new Volkls are going to be a little worse for wear
I've spotted plastic "Sportubes", which look sturdier, but they're pretty expensive - are they really worth it?
Any and all advice would be gratefully received!
Cheers,
Jon

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Just wrap a fleece/ towel whatever you are taking with you round tips and tails. Wouldn't worry too much about getting a double ski bag. I've got 2 pairs of skis in my single with room for other stuff

Thanks for the advice.
I'll have another look at a bags (didn't really want to spend £80, unless I really had to!)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Try and get a bag thats easy to see, when the skis come out of the large baggage pick up area they normally come out in a bundle, you want to be able to spot them straight away.

To make mine easy to spot, I tie an old tie around the bag, makes them dead conspicuous.

Should have added I picked up my bag last year on ebay. suggest you benchmark cost from your shop. Don't think you can go far wrong buying a bag from ebay.

That'll be an old Bow Tie presumably

I suspect you won't go far wrong with a bag at that price

jonflat2, we bought our skis last year and transported them for the first time a couple of weeks ago in a double bag. Wrapped some socks round the tips and bubble wrap round the skis and they were fine

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We use a double SportTube, bought it because it offers better protection than a soft bag. Can recommend them, although a double one is quite heavy. It has wheels and a strap so is easy to pull along...

A warning: a single SportTube will not take skis with Fritschi Freeride touring bindings - they're too wide (high). It took me a while last year to persaude Ellis Brigham to give me a refund after I discovered this - apparently, I should have taken my skis in to check that they fitted!
I got a soft bag instead and, with bubble wrap around the bindings, they've been fine so far (four trips, including one long haul and a couple of journeys strapped to roof bars).

You know it makes sense.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.
I've just managed to pick-up a cheap salomon double bag from my local sport shop. It's got a bit of padding round the bindings area, which might help a bit, and there's plenty of room for clothes and other bits 'n' bobs.
Only 3 weeks, then Norway here we come.....
