Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Boot Shops - NE England

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all

Just got back from a days skiing at Glencoe, Scotland yesterday and this morning the back of by calves is pretty sore aswell as the tip of my big toe. I guess this is probably down to inproper fitting boots from the hire shop. Having been a few times already hiring equipment, I think its a decent time to get some properly fitted boots to improve my skiing rather than relying on worn hire boots that arent the best of fits.

So, I am based in Durham, NE England, so im looking for places that are recommended to get boots fitted. Ive seen/read posts that talk a lot about measuring the foot properly, looking at how the foot lies/arch of foot etc and boots that get made specially to that fit. Can anyone recommend somewhere in the region (I dont mind travelling up to a hour and a half providing the fitting was good). ive seen a couple posts about snow + rock in Gateshead and also the Ellis Brigham (SP?) at Castleford in Leeds. Are there any other places I should look at and where are the more northern england members getting their boots from?

Thanks for your time reading/recommendations/advice.

Chris

@carsey, Glide and Slide at Otley have a good reputation. Perhaps 2 hours from you. Backcountry at Ilkley are very good, but I think that they only sell touring boots.

Anything technical, Kendal.
Backcountry, Ilkley. Both firms pretty reliable and the people are skiers.

Its just for your average beginner skiing on piste....nothing specialised. I thought with the snow centre soon opening in boro be worthy and beneficial having own. So complete beginner/rookie option there. Cost wise, as limited use, dont want to be spending hundreds. Id budget £375 roughly. Seen on the backcountry site they start upwards of £450, and for limited use, but much to be throwing about on.

Ignore internet prices. They're not relevant to anything. Internet prices are driven by completely different factors to the factors which will help you get a correctly fitting boot. So go to the shop and see what the right pair of boots is actually going to cost.

@carsey, if you're planning a trip back to Scotland, Alain Baxter is in Stirling, http://www.alainbaxter.co.uk/boots.html
but LD Mountain Centre have a very good reputation locally.

@carsey, LD mountain centre in Newcastle. Give yourself at least 2 hours to choose and get fitted. Best to go during the week in the day when it is not as busy

Another for glide and slide. I must of tried on about 5 different makes and the ones they recommended were not the most expensive but most comfortable for me. The coffee while you go through it all was good if I rember

I got my Salomon xpro100 boots fitted at EB Castleford before last season, full shells in the oven job to stretch them out for my wide feet and ankle bones along with custom insoles. Initially they felt too snug and at -20'c in Canada, I almost couldn't get them off! but having skied about 7 weeks in them, they are soooo much more comfy than any other off the shelf boots that I have had
