Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Why no more Olympic combined?

They said that today's (men's) could be the last. I'm not up with the race/elite stuff, but it seems to me that something to test all (or at least the 2 kind-of opposing) disciplines favours and proves the best all-round skier, and that there's a point in some people, as athletes, being true all-round skiers, not just pure downhillers or slalom specialists. Why do they want to stop it? What replaces it?

They like the parallel races for spectator and crowd appeal and want to introduce something head to head but need to manage overall number of events. Don't see why they couldn't get best of both with a SG and then a handicapped head to head short SL knockout for the top 16.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

As above, it was mentioned in the commentary today that it may well be replaced with a city based dual slalom.

Maybe the race should start off a downhill, then have a slalom at the end of the course? Madeye-Smiley

...and if it is to test ability as an all round skier, start with a big cliff drop, and have a halfpipe somewhere along the way too Madeye-Smiley

I think a ski octathlon would be pretty cool where they do everything including moguls, slopestyle, sprint xc and a ski jump

Given a choice I'd rather see a head to head dual SL.

The Olympics is turning into a viewers event rather than a true Alpine ski series of events imo, ie so long as its funky and gets viewers interest like slopestyle or skiercross it'll be in but true FIS style alpine events are surely where its at long term, including the combined. Its a true measure of a skiers ability if they can do combined and demonstrates the quality of Marcel Hirscher but doesn't excite the kids at home on the sofa I guess.

I watched the 10 mins of the combined last night on BBC at the end of BBC coverage and couldn't help but think that the Olympics for Alpine skiing days are numbered, Pyongchang is hardly Kitzbuhel, Saalbach or Wengen is it, no atmosphere at the skiing events. Its OK going east and taking it to the masses, so long as the masses turn out but so far they haven't have they, or are they all at home watching at primetime in Beijing whilst the rest of us find out at 7am who'se won the previous day, and have to be content with re-runs in the evening?

Innsbruck not going for 2026 says it all for me. It's disappointing so far, just hope it livens up in next few days, i'm looking forward to the mens' slalom and seeing Hirscher, Kristofferson, Matt, Yule and Ryding.....also womens slalom hoping Shifferin nails it, and will look out for Woodsy but beyond that its passing me by.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

I think there is a distinct danger that the alpine events now get undone by the schedule and the weather and eventually the women's downhill is run the Wednesday after the games to a crowd of no one.

Crowds in person look pretty disappointing and this is a relatively wealthy country with a wintersports heritage.
