Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@snowymum, thanks for that. I guess I should have said we're just looking for a rest/lunch stop, hopefully somewhere with a play area etc.

Our ferry gets to Caen at 06:45, so hoping to drive until 12:00ish and stop to let the kids have a run around.

The last time we did that journey we arrived in Caen in the afternoon, hence stopping at Beaune for the night. However we have also taken the overnight crossing in the past.

If I were doing the overnight crossing I would not bother with breakfast on the ferry as the night is short enough anyway. We would drive for a couple of hours and stop for breakfast at a services before hitting the outskirts of Paris. Hopefully that would mean you were past rush hour by the time you drive through Paris. I think you need an environmental vignette on your car for Paris now..we last drove there before the new rules came in. I would not stop again until well south of Paris, Auxerre at the earliest (as we once had a bad service station experience on the edge of Paris). I'm afraid I can't remember all the services on the A6 in detail as we have only driven down it a couple of times. I assume you will be staying on the A6 until Macon and then taking the A40 across towards Geneva. There is a reasonable service station just after the A40 links up with the A39 near Bourg en Bresse but you will probably have needed lunch before that!

To be honest we have had some hairy journeys round Paris and now take longer routes to avoid it. If you are doing the whole journey from Caen to Les Gets in a day you are probably best off going ahead with your planned route down the A6. We always stop overnight so that leaves a bit more time for a longer non Paris route.

The Brittany Ferries crossings are always fun though.

I didn't think you needed one just for the peripherique ??? (I'm so confused by the discussions on this!)

Yes, that's what we planned.

The kids love the daytime crossings in the summer, but this is our first overnight.

Yeah, would need to be north of Beaune.

@snowsteve, the area needed for the vignette is within the peripherique. If you are outside it you are fine. https://www.crit-air.fr/nc/en/information-about-the-critair-vignette/french-environmental-zones-zcr/paris-zone-zpa.html

However, they are extending the towns and cities using them all the time. I see there is one potentially in place around Dijon/Cote d'Or soon that may affect he A6 and other nearby autoroutes. Anyone travelling to Serre Chevalier could need one to travel through Grenoble and round the Rocade Sud, and extends as far as Vizille.
