Staying down at Villaroger/Les Arcs early March and now worried about accessing rest of the area when conditions poor at the bottom. Does anyone have experience of runs being closed down to Villaroger and options when this happens.
PS first post - please be kind!

The run down to Villaroger is pretty much north facing so holds the snow very well. Early March should be fine.
I think Martin's Webcam is still up to date:

@Basil23, welcome to SH.
Getting out isn't an issue - they keep the lifts running even when they put have to put an 'artificial snow' mat on the grass at the bottom They've installed snow making this year, so you should/will be OK getting back.
On top of that early March should be no problem: OK last year we needed rental / rockhoppers to get down past Soliere Mid-April (even had to walk occasionally between snow patches), but we accepted we were pushing our luck a bit. (and even if it is completely trashed, which it won't be - it'll be a pleasant walk down the forest road to the village!)
We'll be heading down that hill at the end of March this year, and not expecting any problems.
Early March? - you will have no issues.

Seriously, this season the snowfall has been epic.
I'm sure they'll be keeping the pistes running at low levels right the way across many Alps resorts until April this year.
The only thing that would stop that, would be a huge unseasonable warm spell with summer temps in March. Unlikely, but could happen. Most years the Alps does get a decent powder dump during April though

We’ve ski-ed back into Villaroger a few times over the last three years in mid March and even when it had been pretty warm and we could watch the snow line rising up the valley daily from Sainte Foy we’ve always been able to ski back to the bottom lift and usually the car park 30 yards below it. It was a bit dicey on one occasion but as Arctic Roll mentions, they do seem to try to keep the piste open. Snow line currently well below Villaroger. It’s a great way in to Les Arcs too.

Loads of snow down to the bottom last sat though was a tad firm.
Previously late season have had to download on the lowest lift, so access both ways not a problem.

Great place to be based for Les Arcs ( and beyond now ) I have been going there since the late 80's and its never failed me even very early or late in the season. @Basil23, You will be fine, unless you are looking for raucous apres ski ( we used to take our own ). La Ferme is good for a beer after skiing but that is about it. Enjoy

All sounds great, few of us going so should be fine for apres ski entertainment. Will check out La Ferme though.

I'm back to Villaroger in a couple of weeks time. If you miss the last Lanchette chair out of Arc 2000, is there an alternative route back to Villaroger?
Thanks.

Hmm, there is a blue run round from 1950, but looks like it requires the short Rhonaz lift to be open which, as I recall from something I saw on Tuesday when we were there, is "only open when Lanchettes is closed" but I assume this means closed for the day, not "after Lanchettes is closed". I think Lanchettes stays open at least as long as the other lifts, but you probably do need to keep an eye on the clock. Im sure other Snowheads with greater local knowledge will be able to add further clarity

@Zermattandchips, If Lanchette is closed the alternative is a taxi.
|
|
|
|
|

Ski down to the road and walk up rhonaz is the other option I believe
I've never done it, nor do I wish to
|

You know it makes sense.
|
If Lanchettes is closed for bad weather or operational problems then the Rhonaz drag lift is opened. This gives you just about enough elevation to get back to Villaroger but it does involve some ducking under trees and polling.

If the drag is closed you can walk up the nearby track until you have enough elevation to join the track which leads back to Villaroger. No more than 10 mins and not steep.

Does anyone know roughly how much a taxi would be back to villaroger from arc 2000/1950?
Also, i it possible to ski back after apres ski in 2000/1950? We are heading there in a few weeks, and have a pretty strong group of skiiers, but fancy one or 2 days of proper apres before the quiet of villaroger! we would be happy to walk up the piste a little bit by rhonaz, but not sure if its all possible?

It's a long distance by road from Arc 2000 to Villaroger. The cost of a taxi from Arc 2000 to Bourg St March is around 70 Euros, and I'd guess to go to Villaroger you'd need to add another 20 or 30 Euros on top of that. The journey would be close to an hour's drive and 35 km. I don't know about skiing from Arc 2000 to Villaroger. Pisteurs might be a bit cheesed off if you are skiing a closed piste that they are running pistebashers on, and as you say you'd have to walk for a bit of distance to rejoin the correct piste to drop down to Villaroger.
If you want some acres ski time wouldn't it be better to book in Arc 2000 in the first place?

@tagsman, are you talking about going back in the dark after piste closure?
I'm definitely not judging skill level here, but it sounds spookily like one of those train of events that potentially ends up on international news feeds. Especially if you've no knowledge of terrain.
If it's all open piste and reaching Villaroger prior to closure then its a very different story, obviously.
I don't know if you'd get anyone to advise without them being very nervous about outcome.

You can get back to Villaroger from 2000 if you miss last lifts but as already pointed out, you would be crazy to do it in the dark after a few beers.

Thanks for the responses, I didnt realise it was a difficult run (ive never been to les arcs) I thought it might be more like the run down from the ronnie in Meribel.
@rob@rar Thanks for giving me some idea of the costs. We are staying in Villaroger because we found an amazing chalet and there are 25 of us. We want one or two apres, not every night otherwise we would have just gone to 2000, or another resort.

No, it's significantly longer, far less easy to navigate in the dark as there are some piste intersections where you'd need to chose the correct option or you'd end up on a red with some steep pitches. As much as I like a midnight ski home from a mountain bar, I wouldn't chose to do this particular route.

If you fancy a night out after skiing take the Funi down to Bourg, have a few beers there and get a taxi back to Villaroger afterwards. Load of good bars in Bourg, far more choice than in 2000 or 1950, beers will probably be cheaper, the taxi won't cost the price of Brexit, and you won't be tempted to try and ski it in the dark and probably end up dead

tagsman, in interesting thread revival, and i see you have heeded advice.
But please tell me, what exactly is "proper apres"?
As Arctic Roll posted, apres is surely whatever you make it
(Apres for me is usually an episode of Green Wing and a mug of Ovaltine)

@jonpim we were looking for somewhere lively, live music, bit of a rowdy atmosphere. I know its not for everyone, but would like one or two apres like this. I assumed this would be in the main les arcs town
@wills_h good suggestion, will check it out!

@tagsman,
Here’s another angle ski home and go out in Ste Foy village if the band is playing at Hotel Monal or go up to the Double Diamond in Ste Foy station on Wednesday night for Mullit only 10 mins away . Those running the chalet will be able to tell you what’s on that week as those who live in Villaroger socialise in Ste Foy .
OR get an nominated driver to drive up to Val for Cocoricco just as close as Bourg St Maurice .

@tagsman, definitely another vote for @wills_h suggestion. Or indeed Ste Foy.
The funicular runs til about 7.30, 8 ish on a weekday iirc (and is included in your pass) , so you could even end up at 1600, funi down after a few bevvies, add dinner or a couple more in Bourg, and taxi home at a time for considerably fewer beer tokens.

Les Arcs apres is for grandads.

Not really sure the apres in 1950 (there really isn't any to speak of in 2000) is going to be worth all that money??
Yes, there are some lovely places in 1950 but not cheap(!!) and more restaurants etc than bars or clubs...

One thing that does look quite good is the Arpette for some apres, ski down to the the funicular and get the last one down at 715/730, then taxi back up to villaroger.
Thanks @arcticroll for the great suggestion

Last time I did the evening meal in the Arpette we didn't finished until after 9:00 pm so it would be too late to get the funicular down. However it would, I think, match the rowdy apre ski @tagsman, was looking for

I'd assumed it was the evenings when they have a DJ playing from his booth on the terrace rather than the one night a week when they do an evening meal service. I can just about hear the music (2 nights a week?) from my apartment, and it doesn't seem to go on beyond 6pm or so.
