Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

So the story is that the avalanche was man made and the only thing that hit Saas Fee was a cloud of snow which didn't endager anyone at all rolling eyes

I admire your sangfroid. I think that fallout spread quite a lot further than intended. If not, that was an awfully of snow deliberately set up for one shot in the avalanche clearing process.

@achilles, the commentary in German says "zum Glück besteht keine Gefahr. Behörden haben die Lawine per Sprengung ausgelöst. Zuvor wurde das betroffene Gebiet in dem sich keine Wohnhäuser befinden gesperrt...".
Which in summary means, there was no danger and it was done on purpose! No sangfroid required.

@Steilhang, ...right...3 types of avalanche: slab, powder, and wet snow. First can appear small - eg 40cms deep, but involve tonnes of material sliding, and then building up into compressed mass when it comes up against something. If you are in that mass then you are surrounded by concrete. Second was what happened in Saas Fee. They can ride on air, involve tons of material, and can travel at stupid speed, since they are riding on a layer of air - 400 mph+ is possible. They travel unexpected distances. They can include vortices, completely saturated air, and huge forces. Choking and large displacements (being blown a long way or being hit by large objects being blown a long way) = quite normal. They can be fun. They also can kill and they can destroy large objects. Just depends where and when you are. Third is wet snow, and that flows like a river. Same outcome as first. Nice Youtube on this called 'a warning to all freeriders' - shot just across the valley from us. Oh, and rock and stone avalanches can happen too. They do at Aminona, near us. We don't go anywhere near the fall-line of these chutes at any time of year.
