Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Talk to me about.. Snowboard camps

I've been thinking about trying a bit of intensive instruction on a winter snowboard camp next season, does anyone have any experience of these?

So far, going on bashes and an annual trip with a mixed ability group of friends, it's been hard/awkward to slink off to get in some instruction.

Some background; 5 weeks experience, confident on all but icy conditions, I'm in my 30's so not going to be after big tricks but I'd like to be able jump a little. Absolutely love a carve. Mostly self taught, so who knows what bad habits exist! Very Happy

If you're looking for technical performance, I can very highly recommend Neil McNair and James Sweet in Tignes. James (in particular) also does a lot of park coaching.

Neil does a lot of early season (in Tignes, so good snow!) technical clinics, see https://mcnairsnowsports.com/snowboard-coaching/

Or you could come see me (need to start remembering that!) although I'm not likely to run any technical type camps this winter - backcountry camps and private coaching.

Try Onyx, they do a winter camp in Morzine. Went last year and it was a great week.

@stevomcd, backcountry camps you say...interesting, very interesting!

@Robin Agogo, add Definition onto your list to review (http://www.definitioncamps.com). Gav Learmouth and his team do good work and run camps out of Cervinia/Zermatt in the summer, and Mayrhofen in the winter.

This is great stuff, thanks everyone.

What is the difference between a technical performance course and a intro to back country? Unless it's the obvious answer of on vs offpiste! Very Happy

@Robin Agogo, that's it in a nutshell! An intro to backcountry course (certainly with us) would have a lot of focus on avalanche safety, safe travel and just getting out there and riding (as well as some technique coaching) whereas a technical performance course would be much more about snowboard technique, mostly on-piste.

@Gainz, been running BC camps for years with people like Neil McNair and James Stentiford coaching/guiding. Don't have dates up for next winter yet, but will hopefully be much the same, but with me guiding on some of the camps as well! Last year's program: http://www.whiteroomchalet.com/win_backcountry_weeks.htm

I'm currently building my own White Room Snowboarding site.

Good choice - fun though bashes are there is a limit to how much snowboard tech development you can do riding round with a bunch of skiers. Stevo's thing sounds fun - I mean caoahing has got to be more fun with some prospect of pow to ride.

On the bashes front, I was thinking about offering some cut-price coaching on the PSB next winter. It's going to be my first season teaching full-time and it would be a good way for me to get my teaching head on.

Maybe there should be a Sideways Bash?

Anybody run any camps, week courses etc (bar the bashes, of course) where there's provision for both boarders and skiers at the same time (either in a mixed course - i.e. for off-piste safety aspects - or just the same actual location, week, days, hours etc)?
There's a lot of couples (or just groups of friends or families) where 1 person skis and 1 boards - or perhaps where 1 boards very well and the other's just learnt or an intermediate, etc (Mr G and I fall into both of these categories). When I get my snow-knees back, it's something which we'd both like to look into in order to increase technical ability - but find it hard to find many organisations or people who cater for both types of snowsports entusiasts at the same time.

@Grizzler, any decent-size ski/snowboard school will sort you out.

Don't get too hung-up on it being a "course", which almost by definition will be tailored towards one "category".

I'd be interested if there were a back country bash for boarders. Maybe we could all settle on one bash, and boost the sideways contingent with some dedicated guides/coaches such as @stevomcd, ?

Yes, there's not been enough snowboarders at bashes to generate demand for specific tuition before

@Gainz, really depends on the snow conditions. If there's powder available off the lifts, then we'll ride that for sure! If it hasn't snowed for a week or two, we'll hike a bit more to find fresh lines. No more than an hour in a day though, and usually much less.

@Richard_Sideways, maybe a pre-season warm up, so that you are in tip-top condition before the rest of the clan hits the slopes? I suspect that @Sideways_Jnr will be testing your technical skills to the limit next season!

Spoke to @admin earlier, so I'm fully on-board for the PreSeasonBash. Happy to coach anything from straight-up snowboard lessons to clinics on carving, steeps, off-piste, freestyle, etc. Could potentially lead some splitboard touring (conditions allowing) - I'm planning to have some of my own splitboard kit available to hire or Tignes Spirit also have a good choice of split gear to rent.

For freestyle stuff, there may well be some park features available, depends on how much snow there is. If not, there's loads of stuff which can be learned on flatland, side-hits, cat-track drops, etc. If there's a lot of interest in a specialist freestyle clinic, I can also drag in some more specialist instructors - I'm good friends with a couple of real high-level freestyle coaches in Tignes.

If anyone has any particular ideas/requests for clinics during the PSB, PM me and let me know.

@stevomcd, I'm keen on doing some offpiste/BC days with you next season. I may be out at PSB time but have plenty of other trips booked, so will be certain we have some powder to play with.

I'll contact you nearer the time from your website.

@Loubylou, we don't tend to get the critical mass required to run scheduled lessons as a) there are always far fewer snowBoarders than skiers and b) a smaller proportion of boarders tend to be interested in lessons.
However, I do try to make sure we have somebody on the team who is qualified to teach snowBoard so, if you want a private lesson, either for yourself or to share with someone else, that's usually an option. Even if you have 4 or 5 others with whom you'd like to share, that's cool too - although I prefer not to give our guys groups of more than 6 as I think it really starts to impact the quality of instruction that's attainable.

You were in Alleghe of course, and we've not organised lessons there or at the Birthday Bash before. I think the style of the Birthday Bash doesn't really suit lessons as a component of it but, thinking about it, it could be potentially feasible in Alleghe.

I trust you've got over the trauma of 40 people telling you you should 'ski instead', forcing you to break your wrist just to shut them up Wink

As promised, my own site is now up and running! Will be teaching and running backcountry camps in Sainte Foy, Tignes and all the Tarentaise resorts throughout the season. Also running one backcountry camp in Areches-Beaufort, my favourite place to ride before I moved to Sainte Foy full-time.

As above, I'm also signed-up to run snowboard lessons and clinics at the Pre-season Bash.

+1 for a sideways bash, found I was beyond rusty and down to crumbling to dust last April. OK, the metalwork in the leg didn't help but I really need a solid week of feedback and practice.

@stevomcd, hi, presuming your week's fee is the group price . . . or is that per person and I have to sell my first grandchild to afford you Shocked . . . So, if we managed to get a dozen snowboarders to commit to the pre-birthday bash and we covered your bash fees/accommodation, would you consider a week in Italy? Curriculum, timings etc. can be thrashed out later but would that interest you? . . . Or any of the snowboarders reading this?

@Masque, yeah, all lesson / guiding prices are for a group, not per person! Backcountry courses are per person (but include accommodation, etc).

Yes, I'd potentially be up for a week in Italy - although isn't the EoSB in Val Thorens?

@stevomcd, the pre and birthday bashes are in the Dolomites. Big area and good snow time. As much as I like carving on cord and slashing through slush I'd really like a week or so without bouncing my bum off white concrete or face planting into a puddle wink

Ah . . . "Backcountry / include accommodation, etc." . . . happy nights of sleeping on stone floors and mornings of pooping into Tesco carrier bags. Toofy Grin 'Don't defile the mountains', some of us learnt that more than 50 years ago.

I'm getting a little confused... Which bash is it that we're talking about for a convention of the dark side?

I'd really like to hook up with Masque, Robin Agogo, Richard Sideways, jjams etc but am going to really struggle to justify a trip w/o all the other Js, but if I do manage it, I want to pick the best Bash for boarding.

Incidentally the Js (w/o me) are having a taster snowboard session at the Plymouth dry slope tomorrow, with their Cornish rellies. The dark side beckons!
