Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

You can get an hour with an instructor for as little as £67 or £126 if there’s four of you!

You can get an hour here with a British ISTD with french equivalence for 45€. I'm sure they get a far greater proportion of that. In fact I'll ask.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Claude B, you can earn more than that as a fully qualified instructor, but Bracknell aren’t advertising for one. Seems like a good rate to me, no different to a L2 working in Italy

@moseyp, That's why you pay not what they are paid. Just a comparison with Bracknell's £67 for a L1 or 2 max who they pay £7.50.

I’d go for the receptionist job. Nearly as much as the manager, especially if the manager gets suckered into extra hours unpaid. I wonder how much they might pay if there wasn’t a minimum wage.

@jbob, if there wasn't a minimum wage, they wouldn't pay anything, because people are prepared to do that kind of job for nothing as a lifestyle choice with their evenings and weekends, or in return for unlimited use of the facilities.

I've worked for less than £1 per hour before. I had the time of my life.

@Claude B, I'm not sure what you mean but I think you're saying that a lesson costs £67 but the instructor only gets £7.50? My dry slope charges £40 a lesson but the instructors don't get paid at all - the club still isn't making a profit. I don't know about Bracknell, but I suspect the economics are similar.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

If that’s for a private lesson it sounds like a bargain (genuine comment, not being sarcastic!). I’ve always paid closer to 70-80 Euros for BASI/Brit instructors in France.

I go to L2A most seasons at least once, so would be great to know this instuctor is!!

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

The ESI in Les Saisies charges between 78 - 100 euros for a 2 hour private lesson (highest cost in the French February holidays - cheapest in low season). The prices charged by some British schools are very high.

@abj, European Ski School rate for 1 person, more for 2 or more. Specify you want Ian (or Craig for boarding). See also first post of L2A weather thread.

It's all very odd. It's as if the managers / owners couldn't care less how well the instruction is given , how well the instructor assists / improves the client and ultimately, how satisfied the client is with what they have received vs what they have paid.

The most expensive ticket item is a private or maybe even a group lesson and yet the actual instructor receives the least of anybody, whereas the client is probably mostly only interested in quality instruction / improvement and nothing else.

Just take the money - all we really need is a minimum qualified person with sufficient paperwork so we can legitimately 'supply' lessons and charge as much as we can plus sell 'em coffee and cakes.

Some instructors try very hard but i think a minimum instructor level should be BASI 2 - people who can ski a bit and have been on ski's for some time and can spot / analyse client problems having sufficient knowledge base to overcome same. I see level 1's of various ski associations demonstrating snowploughs reasonably well but NOT addressing / correcting other fundamental body positional errors.

As an instructor, if you wanna get good, looks to me you have to do it all yourself - i hope your ski areas are better to the UK domes i know. Standout, high quality instructors are very few and far between and Dome owners don't like using external high end instructors believing 'their' instructors is all they really need... Sad

@Claude B, thanks for the tip.

I’ve seen the European Ski School about the mountain, but it seemed to be all French/Italian instructors - so good to know.
