Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

High to extreme avalanche risk

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Quote:
The westerly wind has been gaining strength since 8pm today. This message is to warn you that the avalanche danger has been raised to Extreme for the Beaufortin and Haute-Tarentaise areas of the Savoie and is High elsewhere in the Northern Alps. The Haute-Tarentaise includes ski resorts such as la Plagne, les Arcs, Tignes and Val d’Isère. Extreme danger means that widespread natural or human triggered avalanches are certain. There are very unstable slabs on most aspects and slope angles and large destructive avalanches are possible. Some avalanches may reach communication links and buildings.

Yes or check with the piste patrol. However I think this kind of reminder is useful, someone contacted me today to say she had phoned her son in Val d'Isère to remind him not to go off-piste for the next few days... he had been planning to do some "between the pistes snowboarding".

As you can see I'm at home... the snow (outside of marked and open ski runs of course) is rotten on the slopes which are reasonbly safe with this kind of risk (forest tracks) and really too dangerous elsewhere.

The recent Olympic silver medal tempted me to drive up to the local runs with the missus' tea tray but it is her souvenir "london underground" one and she wouldn't be happy if it got bent.

We were originally inspired by the luge and here is Jojo - le Fiston in heavy training for the 2022 "Ipswich Snowdome Olympics" last weekend.

Hi Chris,

Jules Gaspard (aka Julio, Jojo or "le bete de l'amour - by his mum) is 17 months old. I'm working on the Dominique Perret theory that you need to be on skis by 2 or you won't make it as a skier :-) although I don't think JG's talents really lie in that direction.

It is pretty warm in the valleys at the mo but managed to snow down to 600m last night, this has melted a bit but it at least means the lower snow is a bit more wholesome. I'm waiting for some purges on the mountains opposite though.

Just to follow up on the original story. Around a dozen avalanche fatalities in the Swiss Grissons, Valais and French Alps over the last few days so it was a timely warning. Conditions are slowly imroving with a good freeze - thaw cycle on south facing slopes but there are still some suspect areas out there.
