Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

BA Business One Way for Luggage Both Ways - when does it end?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I know that this has been answered in other threads more than once. But I promise I have searched the hell out of this forum and I cannot find the answer!

So it always used to be a thing that with BA if you booked Business in one direction, you got your luggage allowance in both directions. Now they've announced that's being stopped. Does anyone know when that is effective from? I seem to remember seeing on one of the forum threads that it's not active yet.

Any help would be appreciated in me booking the right flights Madeye-Smiley

Dang. I wish I'd realised before booking my EOSB flights that extra bags out of Heathrow are more than going out of Gatwick. £70 each way for an extra bag isn't even taking the pish... it's straight up robbery. It cannot be justified in any way.

You can't manage with your ski bag as your checked bag? Or did you book a fare with no baggage allowance?

No I can't manage with 3 sets of skis (and being 6'7" I have big skis), airbag, shovel and probe plus a week's worth of clothes in one ski bag...

Flying out with easyjet tomorrow with 2 pairs (178 & 190 length) all avi gear inc air bag approx 18kg in ski bag. My 60 liter cabin rectangle duffle bag is 20kg though Inc boots & bindings😣. With ba you get 23kg in ski bag plus a extra v small cabin bag. Lots of toys could be cut off if needed ie 2kg plus laptop, gopro etc.

I'd push the land luggage limit. You can take a main hand luggage bag and a laptop bag. Take boots with you, stuffed with things. I have a 50L Marmott duffle bag that I've flown all over with. When others with traditional wheely bags get stopped to weigh them, they haven't glanced at the bag on my shoulder. And take a laptop bag only with clothes in it. Wear your ski jacket etc.

Oh yes you can!

My triple bag with 3 pairs of skis/bindings (184-190cm) and ski poles weighs 23kg rolling eyes

I'm not saying it can't be done (because it obviously can), but I wouldn't want to. I usually have 2 x 23Kg, plus another 10kg plus in a backpack.

I'm feeling like I'm with @PowderAdict

If I take 3 pairs, I'm doing:
- Pair of skis 1 (2x 2285g) 4.57kg
- Pair of skis 2 (2x 2305g) 4.61kg
- Pair of skis 3 (2x 1750g) 3.50kg
- Scott Alpride airbag with cylinders approx 4kg
- Shovel + Probe approx 1.5kg
- 2 sets of poles approx 2kg
- Bindings at 2.5kg
- Bag self weight probably close to 4kg

That gets me to over 25kg before clothes

In terms of hand luggage, I have a boot pack which contains my boots and socks and helmet... then my personal crap (ipad and headphones and stuff).

So I am still going to need a second bag unless we are proposing that I spend the week both skiing and socialising in one set of clothes. Which I don't think would be too popular with those around me.

So on paper I maintain the need for the second bag.

Looking through your weights my weights are fractionally lighter through all ie bca air bag 3.2kg, thule wheeled ski bag 3.5kg so probably makes a difference.
Still maintain you could do it with plenty of fresh clothes but you need 2x new bags.

I believe whether the new policy is used or not depends on when the flight was booked. Flights booked after 17th October I believe do not get the enhanced allowance but those before do regardless of when you fly.

I am using that strategy for the BB as I booked in Sept. My confirmation email states 2 checked bags as does the "Manage My Booking" link on ba.com with the relevant details.

@Themasterpiece, well exactly - or even the second. The weird thing about owning nice skis - and then discovering ridiculous baggage prices - is you begin to use the end to justify the means. You spend extra to take your powder skis on the basis that it might snow and if it did you wouldn't want your nice powder skis sat at home.

I think for LGW flights I'd be tempted to spend the £35 each way for the ability to take the extra luggage. But I have to say that for LHR flights at £70 each way, I'll definitely be shedding the second set of poles and the third set of skis, and squeezing the bindings into my boot bag.

Is it?

If you fly Euro Traveller you get a cheaper fare, 1 hold bag and no food. If you fly Club Europe you get 2 hold bags and food but pay ~£100 more each way for it. Considering that on most european routes the only other differences between CE and ET is an empty middle seat (but even then only if aircraft has 3+3 seating) and, even in an airport, you could buy an equivalent meal to carry on for £30 that leaves a difference of £70 to cover the extra bag.

Seems to me you want to have your cake and eat it. You want (most of) the benefits of business class without having to pay for them.

@Mjit, you also get the lounge which while not necessarily worth c£30 is what you would have to pay. Personally I plan to drink my £30 worth of champagne in the lounge and on the flight on Saturday.

No idea where your paying £30 for a carry-on meal! You would be eating better than business class passengers with that carry-on!

you forgot about BA lounge access in Heathrow as well + priority boarding & bags unloaded first. Oh & baggage is increase to 32kg from 23kg + you are allowed an extra carry-on.
Things I dont care about & only booked business class because it worked out cheaper than booking economy + extra baggage.

Its going to be BA's loss & another airline's gain.

Rubbish. In Business you get 2x 32kg bags and in Coach you're getting 1x 23kg. That means that business class is actually triple the luggage capacity. In economy you're paying £70 to add a 23kg bag.

My argument is not about wanting Business Class benefits for Economy prices. My argument is that from LGW you pay £35 for an extra bag and LHR it's £70 - and that, we all know, is because LHR handles the commercial flights and LGW does the domestics. Just BA profiteering in the areas it believes that people can afford to be screwed harder.

If, at the time of booking, I'd realised that the extra bag from LHR was £70 each way, I'd have definitely bought business class. It's nowt to do with wanting to have cake and eat it. It's to do with BA ever tightening the screw on what your money buys you.

Mr.Egg wrote:

Absolutely. Strong possibility that this is my last season with BA I think. They want to charge champagne prices for beer service, so if beer service is all there is you may as well pay the beer prices of a budget airline.

@dp, have you checked what the upgrade price is to upgrade to business class? BA were emailing us about upgrading our leg back from Paris in the summer for a good price (probably due to not many seats being sold in business class on that route) so might be worth calling and asking.

chirping in on the weight limit.......no chance of getting 3 pairs + gear under 23kg. On my last trip I took two skis and clothes(minimal)/gear for four days and still hit 25kg! Both sets of skis are dam heavy - metal parts on the Marker Baron bindings don't help!

How are people putting bindings in their hand luggage?? I guess they have removable bits?

3x skis can be done. I was 19kg on easyjet scales this morning in aberdeen, with 2x sets leaving 4kg for 3rd pair, bag had plenty of room. My cabin bag was 21kg though.
Quiver killer for bindings allows bindings to be removed and skis easier packed.

Also got caught out by the increase in the extra bag charge. It just made me more disciplined when packing and carried one pair of skis, rather than three. It also made the journey across London on public transport easier so, in many ways, it’s been quite helpful. 😊

Basically my Titanium/Carbon set weigh so little that I put them in there on the basis that if I break or damage my normal set, I've got a spare pair... just because finding 135cm poles is not always straightforward.

What Clarky999 said... some bindings can be removed. A lot of people use Quiver Killers, I personally have rail bindings, either works.
