Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Summer!

Yes I know, lots of fantastic skiing to look forward to first. Cool

However, do need to get thinking about summer holidays so looking for some inspiration! Here's the brief:

Caravan site of the less commercial type - don't mind bar, cafe etc but don't want kids discos etc
Large serviced pitch a must
Pool and ideally access to lake
Must be lots to do in area to keep 3 teenagers happy! Canoe, bike hire etc
Reasonable guarantee of sun
Would like to avoid driving a million miles this year.

Last 2 years by Lake Garda have ticked all the boxes, except it's a long drive.

Valley du Giffre, site in Samoens (about 200 mtrs from main gondola) loads of summer activities, pool ( not sure if on site or neighbouring) but also swimming lakes, high wire tree system in Morillon, rafting, cycling etc.

The whole valley is beautiful in summer, fairly uncrowded too. Also further activities by driving short distance, paraponting and balloon tyred downhill bikes at Les Carroz. Swimming lake and downhill mountain bike course at Les Gets.

Good restaurants and great walks too.

@Boris, there is indeed a swimming lake in Les Gets, it is just up the road from our Chalet and very popular in the summer.

Every family is of course different, but for us, we have found that the Dordogne area is unbeatable for activities. We are not huge fans of big organised campsites with discos etc but nevertheless we do like Camping le Paradis ( http://le-paradis-campsite.com/ ) as although it is large, it is broken up well and it isn't too noisy etc. The river Vezere runs alongside one edge of the site. There is a landing stage for canoes etc. You can hire Canadian Canoes and do a DIY trip downstream with a minibus to collect you at the end and bring you back, or minibus upstream and canoe back to the site.
Loads to do and see. Lascaux is a "must". Cycling, climbing etc available. Several pools on site. No lake but river is there (we prefer the site pools).
It is a longish drive from the channel ports. We tend to break it up by stopping off to see / do Futuroscope and Puy du Fou - one on the way down, the other on the way back.
We have stayed at Le Lac de Saint-Cyr ( http://www.campinglacdesaintcyr.fr/en/ ) near Futuroscope. Quite French in style, lake at the site for swimming. Also at Camping Vallee de Poupet ( http://www.valleedepoupet.com/ ) near Puy du Fou. Very French in style. Pool. River (more for walks / cycling up the valley)

Failing that, have you considered the Gorges du Tarn area? Not been there (yet) but it is high on our list

@Boris, if you fancy Northern France, we've stayed near Lac D'Orient (not far from the Hotel Val Moret) and Lac du Der, both artificial lakes built to prevent flooding in Paris. Have loads of stuff to do on the side of the lake, and loads of activities on it. We haven't stayed on the camp sites, but in nearby hotels, but they don't look over-commercialised.

@Pamski, we have pictures of our son in the swimming lake when he was about 5 ( now 14) and the fountains in Cluses town centre. We had a lovely summer holiday there staying with friends in Verchaix.

Something else for the OP it's only about 1hr from Annecy town and the Lake there on which there's boat hire. Also about an hour ish from Chamonix, both worth a day out. Aguille du midi cable car is worth a look, 3842 mtrs alt spectacular views over Europe.

@JohnHSmith, Yeah Dordogne is a possibility, have had a few trips there over last few years and is nice.

@Hells Bells, funnily enough were looking at that area for a short-break, my gut feel is weather not reliably hot enough for summer?

@ski3, Yep - anywhere in Alps would do trick as well

@Boris, The Ardeche generally ticks the box on being hot enough. We stayed at Ranc Davaine (early noughties) when our boys were teenagers ( but we chose a pitch right on the edge of the site overlooking the hills to get us away from the main hub). However I think that site is now very commercial ....... but as an area its probably still a good place to look. Plenty of water based and walking/horse riding/trekking activities etc.

We had a great summer holiday in Morzine. We got pretty cheap flights to GVA. We had great weather, though I realise it's more of a gamble than southern France.
Happy planning.

We drove to all corners of France for many years; best two sites we visited -Returned to both- were https://www.lesalicourts.com/en/ 90 mins South of Paris, and Camping Les Granges by the Dordogne in Grolejac. Though loved most of the sites we found......
