Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Vital Marmolada lifts closed

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The Drag lifts in the Arei (arei1 & 2) valley have been closed by Bureaucracy. The drags are a vital link for skiers moving between the Marmolada/Alleghe and the Sella Ronda

A translation

"...Belluno-another blow struck on the società impianti Padon-Marmolada in the municipality of Rocca Pietore in the province of Belluno. After the avalanche that in the winter of 2014 had fallen on ski lifts by destroying the support poles, now it's the bureaucracy to "freeze" the tourist activity. The works "Val D ' 1 and 2, important Arei Valley Arei for the carousel of the Marmolada area and the Padon, haven't gotten the green light from the authorities. Had been settled and the life of two ski lifts lengthened thanks to an investment of 150,000 euros. Restrictive rules on avalanche danger however have forced the company Padon srl to stop the "hooks". Concerned the Mayor of Rocca Pietore Andrea Dadkhah...."

==========

"....ROCCA PIETORE. The Ustif not giving the green light to the opening of the skilift Malga Ciapèla-Padon a piece missing at the Sellaronda and the ski school is in crisis. Yesterday the company issued a press release to alert Padon Marmolada srl operators and customers who drag lifts Val d 1 and 2 Planes ' earlier today did not obtain from the competent authorities the necessary permissions for the operation open to the public. "

"We are therefore disappointed in communicating," added the company – that the same surface lifts will not come into operation until further notice.

A "serious issue" for the Mayor of Rocca Pietore, Andrea De Bernardin, which may carry negative aftermaths in the tourism sector. And not just for the Marmolada.

«From Malga Ciapela – explains Dadkhah – there are two ski lifts leading to Padon and that allow connection from Malga Ciapela and Arabba with the Sellaronda. But that latter also communicates with the Civetta ski bus arrives in Malga Ciapela to Alleghe».

Two small plants and dated approximately 2.5 kilometres and that together cover that particular users are usatiin of Melbourne camp including many children beginners, especially during peak periods.

"The two lifts were at end of life technology Dadkhah says – that have necessitated extraordinary maintenance works for the complete overhaul of the two plants. Work done in the last few months for 150,000 euros, of which half made by operators and citizens and half by the two companies Padon and Marmolada ".

So far so good. "Even the testing had been passed-continues De Bernardin – everything was ready to go. Though there has been a request by the Ustif (special transport Office at fixed installations of the Ministry) for an avalanche expert. Expert report which highlighted that there may be avalanches».

Why was not allowed to be set in motion. "It's a very complicated and strict rules, says the Mayor of Rocca – however it is said that there is a problem, when to date there is no danger because the snow is not so much and temperatures are low. The problem is that the hotels are full of customers who had been promised the operation of ski lifts and the ski school. Thinking of taking them in Alleghe is not so simple because that area is already congested with her these days. "

The solutions do not seem easy. «A waiver was sought at least for the holiday season-concludes De Bernardin – and was even told that we

willing to close the lift if it would snow. At present, however, there are no positive feedback. "

As explained by the company will guarantee the connection with the Padon, Sellaronda by chairlift Bill Hut-Passo Padon....."

=======

Presumably they will put a bus service on for skiers, and hopefully some heads will be banged together by the time the season is in full swing....

@albob, ...or somebody wants a stuffed envelope to take care of their Xmas credit card bill! Shutting the lift after a major dump is a fair temporary compromise.

That’s a nice little wooded area with a lovely beer garden that’s a sun trap; ideal after the ski down from Arabba. Shame to see it stranded.

The 2 draglifts that got taken out by an avalanche in that snowmageddon year? And then rebuilt?

The chairlift that got taken out too is more of a critical link. And thy put in millions of Euro worth of avalanche protection when they rebuilt that.

To be honest, I'm always reasonably happy to let an avalanche expert shut a ski lift.

There is huge financial pressures on running ski domains. It would be far easier for the management to keep everything open and just hope like hell that nothing disturbs it. Shutting stuff is them taking a financial hit in the interests of your safety. We should all respect and appreciate that, rather than seeing it as an inconvenience. Yes I appreciate that if we wanted a safe hobby we'd take up chess or golf, but I still think it shows diligence rather than heavy-handedness.

@andy, Yup, but not sure if it was after snowmageddon though.
It’s not a great loss as there is the big gondola at the bottom of the flats and room for a bus to just about get to the chairlift. It was ideal for beginners. That sector catches the sun so probably needs lots of artificial snow.

If staying in Arabba, do you need those drag lifts to ski there and back from Marmaloda? I'm not sure that you do? I seem to recall that you only need them to repeat the runs at Malga Ciapela.

@jellylegs, No you don’t. You can ski down to the chairlift from Marmolada to get back.

So I suppose they're only 'vital' to those coming up from Alleghe when the third Marmoloda cable car is closed? In which case, there's probably a good chance that the Padon lifts would be closed as well.

I don’t think there is an avalanche risk at the moment. There is only 58cms at valley level. The problem seems to be more strategic. A lack of avalanche protection or a particular vulnerability of lifts in that location.
