Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria Smoking Ban Overturned

Which is precisely what you do if you smoke in a room with anyone who isn't.

So we're agreed on that: you have no right to make me breathe cancer smoke.

You, as a sanctimonious non-smoker, have the choice to either stay in the bar in question, or to go to a bar where smoking is not permitted. The smoker, should they wish to smoke, does not have that choice...what more do you want, Nazi?

Other ski countries are available for those who do not like Austrian regulations. However, though for various reasons, I don't think that I shall ski in Austria again, I should be delighted to be able to return, and though I am a non smoker I doubt that I would find a major problem.

More than happy for everyone to go to France instead. More spaces on the heated 8er chairlifts, and more snow for me.

Never had a fag in my life.

Italy was the strange country. It was the law to smoke there, and then one day a comprehensive ban was in place, before most other EU countries.

@achilles, It’s certainly a major problem for those who have health conditions that are exacerbated by smoke and absolutely galling to be forced out of a Bar by the extreme inconsiderateness of some smokers, who keep lighting up even when the atmosphere is already thick with smoke. We’ve found ourselves in this situation, for example, when socialising with friends or watching a live band.

The examples given may target France, not Austria, but the myth of clear mountain air is just that - a myth. You need to consider holidaying somewhere which will not be detrimental to the health of your loved ones, if the poor little mites suffer with such sensitive bronchial conditions......and stop tarnishing the poor, outspoken smoker, who is just trying to enjoy a tab in peace.

The muppets.

I've upped and left restaurants before when some smelly b-tard on the table next to me has lit up, I've moved tables too. Dirty scumbags.

I've come close to smacking the things out of people's mouths when they start blowing their shyte over me. Fortunately I restrain myself and usually just resort to some quality British passive aggressive huffiing and coughing. snowHead

I at least think the last time I went to Austria the larger mountain restaurants had designated areas for the smelly brigade. eg. indoors was non-smoking, then there was a huge outdoor heated gazebo for the smoking section to eat in. Of course you had to walk through that to get into or out of the restaurant - it was like passing through a dense smog !

For the pro-smoking lobby complaining about sanctimonious non-smokers....
.... smoking is something to be entirely sanctimonious about. In fact it rates you as intellectually superior as well morally superior if you don't smoke wink

You'd be sanctimonious if I didn't wash/shower/change for three weeks, stank of BO, and came and sat next to you, waved some unwashed socks in your general direction, changed my kids nappy, and farted repeatedly, whilst you were trying to enjoy your dinner..... and the waft of those doesn't give you cancer. Mind you, you probably wouldn't notice the smell over the smoke wink

Live your life how you want, suck it all in, enjoy it ripping your lungs, your life, whatever, the point is there is no justification you can give for blowing that crap over other people, particulary not in enclosed spaces, close quarters, or where food is concerned. I'm more than happy to be sanctimonous on that point.

And don't get me started on dick heads who light up on lifts.

One could reasonably opine that all smokers are stupid and that some smokers are old. Statement of fact - don't see it as ageist myself (and I am definitely old). If he had made the general claim that "old people are stupid" then I'd have objected too.

I'm pretty sure no-one has ever forced me to go into a smoky bar. If the smoking laws will influence where you want to ski then thats fine by me. Its called choice and we have far too little of it these days. I've more time for people who would defend their right to smoke and make me choose to go elsewhere than those who demand to have their preference for no smoke imposed on everyone else.
I don't smoke and never have but generally speaking I dislike the French (with some exceptions) more than I do smoking therefore would prefer to be in a smoky Austrian bar than a smoke free French one. No offence intended.

That's contradictory from the point of fact that if not for a ban then every bar/restaurant is/was smokey, so you'd have had no choice of elsewhere (obviously other than staying home).

However, without a ban the you will have no choice - so you will either not be entering any bar or have to put up with it - even though it is detrimental to your health and entirely avoidable and as a non-smoker you would be in the large majority of users.

Care to expand? I appear to have more choices than ever - almost too many. So I am intrigued as to what choices have been removed from you.

There are already bars that have properly divided and separate areas so I'm quite happy. Being alive is detrimental to everyones health so I'm pretty ambivalent about some cigarette smoke.

Not in practicality. Some bars are non-smoking, most have separate areas. If I want to go into a bar that doesn't have I still would.

i was in soll a couple of years ago and at lunch time found a small out of the way mountain restaurant, i am a non smoker and this place had no segregation, but as no one else was in it if was fine, it was self service so i self served myself a portion of chips and went to the check out, where a dear old soul of about 75 smoking like a chimney blew her smoke all over my meal, i told her that was not very nice and stormed out. austria is a no no country for me now, but if all the skier smokers went there that would leave us non smokers to enjoy france and italy.

A group of 8 of us managed to get the last booking slot in a tiny steak restaurant in Schladming a few years ago. We had been before and knew the food was delicious. We were the only customers in, our steaks were served and we had just began eating when the owner, his wife and a couple of their friends sat down opposite us and all 4 of them started smoking. The smoke drifted over us and our food and our request for them to stop was met with a sneering refusal. You should have seen their faces when we put our jackets on and opened up the windows behind us letting in the snow and freezing air before sitting back down to finish our steaks. They moved first !
We went to the Mexican the year after that.

I have only done this twice as other times just just saying "excusevme it is not allowed to smoke on the lifts" is enough.

Lift operators will say the same thing in an official capacity and write it down in their report ,make sure they do.!!

This is normally enough for the offender to stop because they will be warned next time will be a lift ticket gone & police...

Btw . This has nothing to do with Health (cancer) of fellow passengers.

Cigarettes butts etc are fire hazard in the summer months. Thousands of butt debris under the lifts when the snow melts.

So why/how is it legal to smoke in bars/restaurants (enclosed space) but not on lifts (chair lifts in the open air or are we talking gondolas/cabins. Is non-smoking lifts just a lift company rule? Seems not if the police can be called.
