Snow Reports

Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

has anyone had experience of hiring a car in zurich then driving to austria ?I am trying to work out if the swiss and austrian vignettes will be in the car. I suspect the swiss one will be but that I might need to get the austrian one en route (we are driving to st anton so will need to use the motorway at some point). cant get a clear answer from the hire car broker so would be good to hear of your personal experience. thanks

@backhojo
, re Austria, stop at the nearest garage to the border, or at the border near Bregenz and buy it there. You'll see the signs.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Swiss vignette is yearly, and should be there.
Austrian vignette is from 10 days. So probably need to buy one yourself.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

you will need to buy an austrian one if it is not an austrian registered car. anyway, easy enough to buy at 8,90 for 10 days. look for this sign

If you go through the Arlberg tunnel, then they'll make you buy one at the toll booth if you don't have one already. AFAIK this is the standard price and they don't penalise you for not having already got one

A few years back, I hired a car from Friedrichshafen (Germany) and drove to the Arlberg. I bought the Austrian motorway vignette at or just before the border at the official shop. A few miles down the motorway, a friendly Austrian policeman was slowing the traffic down and checking windscreens for them. He looked mighty disappointed that we already had one on our German-plated car!!
I wouldn't chance not buying one at the border, if not just before!

@viv
, you’ll pass about 20 sets of cameras by the time you get to the Arlberg Tunnel and be a few hundred € lighter!
