Poster: A snowHead

One of my suppliers has forwarded this to me:
"EMS-GRIVORY will increase prices of its High Performance Polymers Grilamid L PA12 worldwide between 0.70 and 1.80 EUR/kg as of Jan 1st 2018.
Prices for other long chain Polyamide Types such as Grilamid 2S PA610 and 2D PA612 will rise from 0.40 to 0.80 EUR/kg.
The increase is a consequence of the general shortage of raw material for Polyamide 12, steady demand growth for Speciality Polyamides driven by a positive economic trend and the undiminished realization of new applications in various market segments.
EMS constantly strives to further raise its production capacity for Speciality Polyamides. This implies a minimum return, both short and long term, to enable important future investments.
As a leading supplier of Speciality Polymers, EMS-GRIVORY offers a very broad range of long chain Polyamides as alternatives to the tight Polyamide 12.
Available compounds based on these polymers cover most of the typical application profiles."

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

As boots weight about 5Kg/pr, I can't see it making a huge difference TBH. Unless the manufacturers cite 'a doubling of raw material costs' in adding £100 to a pair....

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Oh my God!!!! This is ONLY BECAUSE OF BREXIT. Why are the BBC not all over this? Surely they, the BBC, could spend at least two weeks blocking the "Wedding" news to send yet more excessive bad and depressing news out to the gullible, echo chamber Corbyn worshipers.
******uck!!
In other news a fox was hit by a car on a quiet country road, the driver is recieving counciling due to excessive garage demands.

Nylon 6 and Nylon 12 are not High Performance plastics they are low spec and low performance generally used in high volume moulding applications where accuracy is not critical. Nylon is hygroscopic with Nylon 6 taking on up to 10% water and so everything made with it will continually change size depending on humidity and temperature.
As @martinm, says doubling the cost of the raw material from 2 Euros a pair to 4 Euros a pair should make little difference to the final cost of a pair of boots. More significant to the cost of boots is the vast amounts spent on advertising, sponsorship, general marketing and the huge discounts given to the hire industry.

@Timc,
What you say is not true about PA12 which is a very different material than PA6 made from very different feed and about 5x the price.

you may be thinking about PA66 rather than PA12?

@Timc, but that was my point the price rise is on Grilamid PA12 which IS a high performance engineering polymer particularly suitable for L/W ski touring boots. You were arguing it isn't a high performance plastic - it is.
One of its benefits over PA6 and PA66 is that it doesn't absorb moisture nearly as much

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Certainly not!
People seem to have forgotten than for the latter half of 2008 and the first half of 2009 the £/€ exchange rate was worse than today, living in Germany but salaried in UK I remember very well but a job was a job then, yet anytime something, anything, goes up in price the B word is mentioned. Lets just get it done, the negativity of faffing is more damaging to the overall position of UK. Wrong thread, apologies all.
