Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi
Looking to book a ski holiday for my brother’s 40th.
We are all pretty much beginner skiers and would definitely go to ski school. So looking for somewhere with nice easy runs
In the party would be
Me, my husband and my brother
My parents- non skiers (like restaurants and nice wine bars!)
My children 4 and 2
Looking for a family resort that has things for the children but also had good apres ski for my brother- he’ll stay out once we are all ru led up in bed!
Thanks in advance

@GBR1980, welcome to Snowheads. Samoens would appear to fit your requirements, as it's in the valley for your parents, in a proper (and very pretty) town and also gives you good access to snow. I'd recommend Zigzag as a ski school.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

+1 for samoens, brilliant village for non skiers who can easily access the snow via the gondola for snowballing and sledging fun! Zigzag are an amazing ski school, the village puts on loads of kid activities. Depends what you want from apres, given it is a family friendly village the nightlife is limited! But there is some...

I disagree somewhat about Samoens -- if you are staying in the valley you have to take gondola up to mountain, which means extra time in transfer and difficulty in getting everyone together at the same time. And unless you speak French I don't think the apres-ski is going to suffice. Low altitude = 700 m, means snow cover in valley is iffy. Definitely great for kids, however.
I don't know much about Austrian resorts but from what I read on here many would suit you better.

The Samoens ski area does not start at 700m but 1600! The slopes are north facing and it has a good snow record. Nevertheless you can not ski back to the village and whilst the village is very attractive some people might prefer to stay somewhere where they can look out at snow covered rooftops. I also think there are better places for beginners.
If you are going mid season La clusaz might be a better option as the non skiers could easily take the bus to Annecy for a day.

Ha, I know that very well. I've cycled from the town of Samoens up to 1600 where runs start. (though you can also access Grand Massif from Morillon at 1100 m, I think) That's a leg-breaker of a climb, something like 9 percent average over 8 kms!

I'm going to chuck in Arinsal in Andorra
Lovely village
Perfect for beginners and kids
Lots of nice places to eat and have a drink.
English speaking schools
But as it's the only place I've ever skied I have no where to compare it to

Madonna Di Campiglio in the Brenta Dolomites could be worth a look.
It’s a proper, bustling alpine town, so should tick the boxes for parents and brother. As for the pistes, there are plenty of wide and cruisie runs for beginners/progressors.
I’m not aware of things for the kids but, as it’s a proper town, I’d be very surprised if there weren’t plenty of options.

I'd agree that La Clusaz, Samoens and Madonna dC are all worth a look.
Other options worth looking at:
Hinterglemm - lively austrian village with jolly apres, good skiing, great for families, ski right into village, pretty resort, good bus connections so non skiers can explore
Sauze doulx - good cruisy skiing, lively apres yet also good family option, more limited for non skiers though
Les Gets - Pretty family focused resort, good easy skiing, not sure about apres but there must be some, good bus links for exploring.

How about Briancon? A proper town (the highest in France) with family-friendly skiing in Serre Chevalier.
I'd also suggest Kitzbuhel, or if you want somewhere really spectacular, Zell am See (although Zell isn't that great for apres).
Les Gets is also a really good shout.
Also look at Val d'Isere and Hinterglemm.
