Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

St. Anton or Kitzbuhel accomodation?

Hi,

Having recently sold our apartment in the Grand Massif, we are very lucky as a family to be skiing Whistler this season. However, this leaves me with a dilema for my usual trip with a friend for 3/4 days. I fancy a lively Austrian resort. I know Kitz is good for Aprs having been a couple of times, and I hear St. Anton is and I know both are good ski areas... however I cannot find reasonably priced accommodation. Any ideas? Its 2 blokes, nothing fancy needed - only real stipulation is not wanting to drive in an evening to get to the nightlife.

Both Resorts are High End so you will have to define your budget??

I'm not looking for dirt cheap... but the only ones I can see (admittedly only looked on Booking.com etc) are coming out in the thousands, rather than the hundreds for 3 nights!

@stevo_the_saddler, Look on the websites, both have very good accommodation sections and i'd look at 3* Pensions. Make contact directly, preferably in German - more likely to get a prompt reply in my experience.

@stevo_the_saddler, Just a point - most owners only like to pre-book 7 day stays, they only move to 3-4 days if the snow is bad (not very often) or right at the last minute if they are struggling to fill rooms (again not often)..... so the reason you are getting expensive places is that you are getting the big hotels that are more flexible on bookings because they have volume. The smaller places tend to sit tight until almost the last minute in my experience (esp in St Anton). Have been to Kitbuehel many times also and that's the same thing, or was 6-7 years ago when I was last there.

My suggestion is either book a full week, pay over the odds for a 3-4 day trip, or leave until the last minute and search week before going (or not). The prices you are likely seeing is effectively a full week (they just assume the bed will be empty for the other 3 days, and straddling a weekend peak season is almost impossible in AUT in my experience.

I've just booked a four night trip to St Anton for early March. I emailed about about 14 pensions and received offers from 3. All but one of the offers were from places in Pettneu but the nightbus service is good for getting to town and back in the evening.

Hotel Edelweiss in Kitzbuhel, five mins walk to the hahnenkahm gondola, less then ten into town. Great hosts, food, accommodation. It is next to the main train line but that is not a problem,to get to the gondola you actually walk on the station platform. comes out within the top three hotels in Kitz on Trip Advisor

Its hard to find a place in Austria for 3/4 days as most of them want you to book Sat-Sat.
I did find this place with the ski lift on your door step and the town centre 5-10 mins walk, the breakfast was nice and i would definitely stay there again

I know it's a pain. We started off doing part weeks (which surprisingly often did dovetail so that it was a rarity to have unbooked part-weeks, and also Sunday to Sunday. There is certainly a demand for both. However most people do seem to want Saturday to Saturday holidays, so you find yourself being drawn to follow the normal pattern in order to avoid complications. Of course all the accommodation owners have problems finding cleaners on Saturdays for obvious reasons.
