Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski based art/photos

Poster: A snowHead
I'm looking to have a ski/snow based theme on the walls in one of my rooms at home. I'm not particularly good at interior design or recognising 'quality' art, I just know what I think looks nice. I quite like old school resort adverts/posters. I also have a thing for maps too.

Any recommendations on where to look.

I saw these a while back and quite like the texture... http://petecaswell.co.uk/wp2/skiing-snowboard-prints-for-sale/

For photos I like some of the stuff from Reuben Krabbe, although I don't think he officially sells it, just tells people to contact him via email whenever they ask how to buy.

I was tempted by the pictures by Mark Richards in Whistler. He uses a combination of photograph and painting, and as a result the pictures can be produced in various sizes. Some even use paint techniques that allow the pictures to change depending on how they are lit.

I got one printed on aluminium for in the surgery at work, found a decent stock photo of Val D, paid for high res version, uploaded to a nice man somewhere and a few days later a dirty great thing arrived. Perfect. Will look at the Whistler stuff for the other wall!

We have quite a few of the vintage posters on our walls. All bought in resort- we have found the tourist office to usually be the best place to buy them.

Stuff like this: http://pzrservices.typepad.com/vintageadvertising/images/2007/11/24/an_old_poster_of_zermatt.jpg

Do you have any photo's that you've taken yourself? Or from friends and family? These can look unpreposssing at first, but with a bit of trimming and adjustment can look pretty good. Don't necessarily try and make them huge unless the originals are 20MB upwards. Here are some of mine just using a cheap 8MB camera or my iPhone. I've used a photo printing site to mount the latter two on acrylic, one for our apartment and the other as a birthday present to the guy in the photo. Perversely, although I have an expensive DSLR camera and lenses, some of my best shots have been taken with just the small camera I had on me while skiing. Apologies for the size but I don't have time to edit them down. If you don't have anything you think is suitable, why not try and consciously take some this winter and see how you get on. Photos taken by yourself are often more evocative than ones from stock.

Using my iPhone on Pano:

Just taken from the apartment balcony with a mobile, but evocative.

Below, Pierre Avoi, above Verbier Switzerland with an 8MB small Canon iXUS. Note thw two guys walking up the overhang.

This is the only one taken with a big camera, a Canon DSLR:

@LaForet, yes I’ve got thousands of photos, I’ll have a look through them. Used to carry a bridge camera with me, then a compact camera and now just rely on my phone.

For something more abstract, there has been some nice stuff from Jamie Lynn and Juna Tinta through Asymbol.
There is a good mountain photography portal there too

hammerite, you could check out work by Grant Gunderson - takes some amazing pictures, another to look out for is Darcy Bacha . Met him on a plane some years ago, and bumped into him again last Feb in Revelstoke, while he was working out there with a crew. Toofy Grin

Second your own stuff, worth looking through photos. I have a canvas print of this I took of my daughter a few years ago on my wall here. I get great satisfaction from how she looks and how well my shot has come out.

If you like historic B&W shots it's worth looking in resorts. A couple of shops here own all the originals of a photographer who worked here in the 50s and 60s when there was very little here. I've still failed to find one from about 65 though showing my building Confused

It was more fortuitous than deliberate. I did use a higher ISO because in the forest the light was so low, but the shutter speed was just right to get a bit of 'streaking' of the snowflakes (they were really big flakes as well, which always makes for a more 'snowy' shot). There's a bit of post-processing using Photoshop to get more detail out of what were just shadows. A day when I was glad I bothered to cart 'round a couple of kilos of DSLR (Canon EoD 5D Mk.III & 24-70mm f2.8 L II ESM zoom) and when an f2.8 lens gives payback for the weight/cost.

I have some original resort advert posters from the 60's in one room. Bit like this:

Photos are another good idea, I have one which I had professionally printed and framed (not skiing related) which several people have commented on so could obviously use a skiing themed photo!
