Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@nem, well done, but what makes you think they won't be coming with you next year? Son no 1 is coming out in March, and I've just spoken to son no 2 and his uni is affected by strike action on the first week of our holiday, so he might come too.

We have been meaning to return to Serre Che ski area for 20 years and it seems this is the year. We are staying in Briançon.

A couple of questions for the residents.

1. Is there ski storage at the base of the gondola in Briançon?
2. Is there public transport that allows skis on board that will take us to Montgenevre?

TIA (we may be back with more later)

KenX may be best bet, but having driven past Briancon gondola its not obvious that there is ski storage at base of gondola, or for that matter a decent sized car park. Montegenvre is nice but not sure I would take the time out from Serre che to visit, unless there is a very easy public transport link, which I'm not aware of.

Hi NE1,

We were out in Serre Chevalier a few weeks ago, staying in Briancon and had a day trip over to Montgenevre to see family who were staying there. We used the public bus and took our skis on it. Timetable can be found here https://www.05voyageurs.com/ and you can book tickets in advance if you want.

We got the bus from the Champ de Mars stop (outside Briancon old town). We took the 8.05 bus and we managed to get seats, although it was fairly busy with Montgenevre resort staff and ski instructors. Hope that helps.

@NE1, I think the SkiSet shop by the gondola has ski storage available for either rented equipment (free) or your own (small charge)

Hi folks, arriving on Saturday for a week, weather looks exciting! Having to drive over from Lyon so just wondering if Lauteret is closed, dunno if this is likely, what is the best alternative route?

@scottishandy, it really will depend on the actual snowfall on the day. It is usually open unless it is actually snowing or very windy. Best alternative if it is would be via the Maurienne and Frejus tunnel. If howver, you've already got to Vizille before finding this out, head over the Col de Boyard in the direction of Gap. There will be warnings on the gantries as you go around the Rocade though.
This website will give you information nearer the time. http://inforoute.hautes-alpes.fr/www/index.html . I think there is a phone app too, and the Serre Che phone app gives me notifications if the Col closes.

A quick couple of questions for the Serre Che specialists..
The Road over the Col De Lauteret, is the road all fixed and working properly now? We are driving out 24th March.
Ski School for the kids, staying in Chantemerle, what are the options other than ESF, preferably English group lessons. Kids are working towards Flocons and 1 star.
Thanks in advance..

Road is no problem now though do keep an eye on forecasts and link @Hells Bells, posted above.

Re ski school in Chantermerle, not too sure of an English outfit - best to contact Davina Ski Solutions and I'm sure they'll help you out.

Rather chilly here this morning minus 15 - catching up on some work and maybe I'll try xcountry again but yesterday wind and ice were a problem, only go if they've bashed the track.

Light snow started around 15:00. Earlier I was round in La Vachette (top of Val Claree / Nevache) starting at Les Alberts on the ski du fond tracks there, and was brutally cold with a strong wind.

So will be interesting to see what we get by the morning, but should imagine will be enough to play havoc with the summer tyre tourists Toofy Grin

Worth keeping an eye on the bird table as doubt you'll see much on the cams at altitude.

Just a bit worried about the winds tomorrow.

@leggyblonde, yes there's a few around. Sport Rent springs to mind but have not seen them out yet.

I know the guy so can pop in and ask him. There's also the turbo in my garage, and NO you can't borrow my S Works Rubaix Smile

Plus kick the lifts into touch and go touring instead Toofy Grin

I need to think of ways to get away from 44 people trashing our snow Toofy Grin

Coming down still, all of a couple of cms now.

@Hells Bells, I went up to Monetier yesterday, finally making it on the XC Skate skis and popped in to see Tim working at the Halte and the place was just so bonkers busy, totally rammed, could not quite believe it and poor old Tim was working his bollox off, totally non stop madness.

Today XC at La Vachette and twas very disappointing having to take your skis off at numerous times and piste in a bad state, plus I paid €8 for the privilege as my Serre Che ski du fond pass was not valid which was worth trying.

@JackSkier, was nothing like Serre when we skied there last Wed.

That said first lifts here, as some open at 08:30 might be the best option before the hordes get to the lifts, depending on how much we get.

However on big snow falls overnight that can often backfire as top lifts do not open or you have to wait for avy control.

Monetier might be the best option.

 You know it makes sense.

Overnight heavy snowfall produced around 40cm in the garden.

We went for 08:30 lift at Monetier and as usual opening was delayed a little though hardly surprising.

Once up that Bachas went over to the secret pistes and must have had those more or less to ourselves in some truly epic deep untracked on the pistes further to the right.

http://youtube.com/v/vA_aco9vtkM

We kept lapping those taking the drag up and the liftie thought it was amusing every time we came back down we were covered in snow from face shots, and even after five or six laps people had still not sussed the lift out!

Eventually the hordes arrived and we hooked up with @KenX, and Darren T's OH Bushey and we skied back down to take the Bachas back up.

Then it was a long hike in deep snow along La Crête des Lauzières and the forest below which had some of the deepest powder I've ever skied and presented a new problem in that with the powder billowing over your head at speed you could not see the approaching trees too well, was pretty epic!

And then finished up with a well earned beer.

Forecast looks mildly bonkers and Saturday could well see carnage on the roads, and then have you seen forecast for next week!

Some very deep snow, highlight being the La Crête des Lauzières. Dangerous avalanche conditions out there, we felt several 'whoompfs' in the snow pack- and we were playing very safe in terrain choice.

@JackSkier, hope you and your group appreciated the track we kicked in for you to do the Crete des Lauzieres (see image above) Toofy Grin

More snow this morning - though only around 5-10cm on the van from the looks of things and sweeping the patio a bit.

No rush for us this morning - will go up and take a look laters as I have a little plan Cool

And then there's tomorrow, and currently next week looking bonkers.

If next week happens then they're going to have to work really hard to keep the pistes open.

Bit of a mini adventure (for a change), been on the bucket list for quite a few years but never enough snow.

Off the back and ski down to Puy St Andre and climb back up from around 2/3rds of the way down, except the snow was just too deep and heavy. Managed about 75m vertical so off with skins and back into ski mode skiing back down traversing below Puy St Andre and then hitched back to Briancon with a car stopping just as we took skis off, result!

Some of the old irrigation canals were a tad problematical, and we did find a superb route through some great trees and tiny little conifers.

We opted to take the bus back, so one way to avoid the Friday hordes and score untracked Cool

We went from good viz up top to dense cloud lower down in the trees

Some of the trees in the forrest were turning Japanese.

Then there were some way better gradient to let the skis run

But then it was payback with a tough old climb, and the weather started clearing

So for the final run down we had some very sweet conditions.
