What sort of skiing do you like?
Where have you skied before?
What standard are you?
Why just the two options?

Tignes sounds better from this point of view but there are an awful lot of other resorts within easy distance of Geneva that would suit as well or better.
Main problem with Tignes is if the weather is bad there are very few sheltered runs.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@carioca90, wait until January to decide. Then you can choose which has best snow. Also you would get a good price.

Tignes. Unless you have your own transport.

Tignes is not "next to Geneva", it's a 4 hour journey, can be worse if the traffic is heavy and if that is a reason for choosing then there are many resorts that are closer. I don't think either resort you've suggested is particularly good for "beginner - intermediary" if the emphasis is on beginner but Tignes would be the better of the two.

Near Geneva -- Morzine good for 'beginner - intermediary'

Love Chamonix but a pain unless you have own transport or a chalet that drops you off/picks you up. Clubmed a good option for this resort.
Love Tignes as all the skiing your hearts desire. Little cold and austere in January with not massive tree skiing. Val D'isere maybe a better option then.
Close to Geneva - Portes del soleil or Grand massif. Both good skiing and plenty of tree skiing. If you are coming all the way from Chile combine a week in two if you are over for a fortnight.

What about Saas Fee? More picturesque than Tignes. Glacier to guarantee snow and they're doing a season lift pass for 222chf!

You know it makes sense.
|
@carioca90, i can't believe Morzine or Les Carroz in the Grand Massif don't have as good prices. It's possibly a little early to be looking as many family run hotels won't even have thought about pricing for next year.

@carioca90, how many people will you be, and what sort of accommodation do you want - hotel, chalet, or self-catering?
There are lots of options in the Grand Massif at all sorts of prices, and it is less than an hour from Geneva to most of them. If you want to experience a proper French village then Les Carroz, Samoens and Morillon all work, and all have tree-lined runs which is important if it snows (likely in January). Flaine is also in the Grand Massif, it is higher but it is not a proper village and doen't have that many tree-lined runs, so not as nice in bad weather. All the resorts are linked for skiing.

Neither of those resorts is known for being especially cheap and if you have concluded that they are, sorry but I'd question how much research you have done.

Book late - good prices in lots of places in January. Wait to see where snow is good.

Not too certain I'd want to stay in a 40 euro a night room in a French ski resort in season.

Neither Tignes nor Cham ideal imho for a beginner/int on their own... all else being equal.

@carioca90, Courmayeur is OK but much smaller ski area than Chamonix or Tignes.

@carioca90, UCPA is a French action holiday/youth hostel idea. It seems well run and if you were on your own, would seem to be good fun to be social - and very well priced.
I would book flights (all the options discussed so far are accessible from Geneva) and leave accommodation to later when all options are available.
