Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

(No longer) Urgent advice please - acl rupture

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Sorry this is in the main bit but need urgent advice. In Austria, have completely ruptured both acls... ( you know those threads about blue run fast idiots? A story for another day.)
Had MRI, in braces etc. Lots other ligaments trashed as well but they reckon they'll heal.
So, any point coming back to UK quick, anything else worth doing.
MPI insurance so far been brill, btw.
Thanks all.

If it's any help my daughter was 10mnths between blowing her ACL and having it repaired. She carried on instructing for half a season with it gone.

@Grizzler, I'm sorry to read that - real bad luck. If the Austrian medics feel that you can go back to the UK in steady time you should be OK, I think. MPI will, I hope, looking at what assistance you need to return (eg maybe a row of seats in the aircraft, seat for you helper close by, how you are going to get from UK airport to home).

I was told they couldn't (wouldn't) operate until the swelling had gone down and I had full ROM. Took about 3-4months.

Best of luck.

@Grizzler, So sorry to hear. There's probably not a lot to be gained by coming back to the UK immediately. Take the opportunity to relax with legs well up & iced. Make an appointment while in Austria to see your gp on your return & take it from there. Also, the doctor in Austria that you saw could probably arrange some physio for you - very passive closed circuit stuff at this stage. Also ask about anti-coagulants for your trip home. Will you be flying?

@genepi, I have anti coagulants to inject every day, bit scary... Also have fit to gly certificate.
As it is sunny here, and I have some pretty strong painkillers with me, I might well stay and try to enjoy what I still can, at least a few more days - though looking at everyone else having fun... Crying or Very sad
I don't think that the NHS will be as eager to offer me surgery as the Austrian clinic, though. I will indeed make a GP appointment and ask for an urgent referral to a specialist. Hopefully the insurance will cover private physio, but right now I'm just facing a summer of no walking, hill climbing, indoor skiing, boarding or anything keeping fit at all, I guess.

You need advice from @Jonathan Bell
He's the expert on here for this sort of thing, he suggests get your MRI scans done somewhere and bring along to him for a consultation.
Perhaps PM him.

Sorry to hear about your trouble sound nasty doing both of them !!! that is very unlucky Sad

Grizzler, Sad.
If you are in the Sheffield area and Jonathan Bell doesn't give you a specific recommendation, Derek Bickerstaff specialises in knees and has a decent reputation. I think you can see him privately or via the NHS, though what the waiting list is like for the latter route don't know.

@Grizzler, Check out your holiday travel insurance - you may well find you are able to claim an amount towards physio when back in UK. Mine covered me for £500 worth.

@Grizzler, take a look at what I wrote http://www.anotherharddayattheoffice.co.uk/aclknee.html

Not least because of NHS etc

This is what I did

I do not have private health care insurance so I was facing going down the NHS route and I knew that would take a fair number of months.

To leap frog the system as it were, I suggested to my GP that I pay for an MRI, to do that he had to refer me, he thought that was a good move saving at least a couple of months as the NHS process would be, GP referral to Muscular Skeletal (3 or 4 weeks), who would then see me, only to refer me to Orthopaedics (3 or 4 weeks) who would then say I need an MRI (another 3 or 4 weeks).

Vista Diagnostics in London charge £200 to £300 depending on how flexible you are, the Radiologists report is then sent to your referring GP though you get a copy of the disc with 144 images of your knee!

Did someone crash in to you and cause your injury?

If they did, and you you have their details, would their insurance not cover your rehab medical expenses?

Yes, someone hit me, fast, from rear side. Fortunately Mr G managed to get them, they didn't stop, but think we have their details - didn't speak English, very reluctant to exchange... I am waiting for legal advice from my insurers.
Getting flown tomorrow - sad as it's so sunny but can't walk at all and have managed to get physio appt near home (GP so far no help at all): mpi will pay £300 physio, so a start at least.

Currently look like RoboCop in full leg braces - excellent ski stance and quad strengtheners tho'!

@Weathercam, thanks, will read that fully.
I had MRI done yesterday in resort, so hopefully that speeds stuff up. Accepting I'm probably out next season with 2 acl to do; just desperate to be able to UK hill walk & scramble as that's my main everyday fitness and year- round love.5

OK - in that case proceed directly to A&E as soon as you are off the flight, with any info you have, including the MRI scan.

They won't be able to treat you there and then BUT they should book you into the relevant clinic with a consultant. This will save you a few weeks waiting on a referral from your GP and your MRI is likely to save another few weeks waiting for a scan.

Did you say you'd had an MRI in Austria? Can they put the scan on a CD or email it to you? Otherwise do what @Weathercam did and get a private one done back in the UK. My wife tore her ACL and meniscus in August 2015 - to hurry things up she also used Vista Diagnostics in Waterloo - had the operation done in February 2016 on the NHS. Full replacement using a bit of hamstring to make a new ACL.
You might not need all that, hope not and good luck!

Otherwise have your reported the incident to PC Plod. I'd be inclined to get it recorded as serious injury assault by the guy who hit you.

@Grizzler, I can't imagine what it's like to have both ACL's go, one is bad enough!

I did regain mobility quite quickly and was able to cycle a lot but no way was I prepared to kitesurf / hike / run etc

What was ironic was that I had keyhole to my other knee whilst recuperating from the ACL Op and the surgeon went in with a camera and then after he'd done the shaving to my torn cartilage went and had a look at the rest of my knee, only to find in that knee I did not really have a complete ACL and that at some point I must have torn it!

This bombshell comes at around 5min into the vid!

@Dave of the Marmottes, yes, just sat with a bemused Austrian Inspector, wondering why I wanted to report it... Insurance co advised me in case I can claim off her.
And it was a lady (clearly with sight issues...) who slammed me.@AndAnotherThing.., maybe the next day but thanks for the idea. Oddly what my GP's receptionist said too : and they complain A&E is overstretched..
@agw, yes, the clinic in Mayrhofrn do it automaticaly, MRI & x rays. Pity the letter to my GP is in German!

Just to thank everyone for their input and kind words - really helpful when abroad and my very first accident or injury in many trips and many years on skis.
We actually got brought home Wednesday, a very nice business class flight and wheelchair assist both ends. Certainly giving me an insight into many problems which others face.
GP in UK at the end of the day was no help at all and didn't know what I should do or where to go. Stopped in at Minor Injuries Unit (no nearby a&e) on way back from airport, but they wouldn't look at legs at all as aren't allowed to deal with compression bandages! Managed to find via Internet a drop-in clinic open the next morning in Sheffield, so got in car & rushed over (part of fracture clinic) & they were helpful and very swift, gave legs a good check over, looked at MRI images - though admitted weren't at all experts on my injuries, gave me some basic advice (though I still have 1000 questions), put some things at ease, said they were impressed at what the Austrians had done and got me a consultant clinic appointment for this Monday morning. We'll see where we go from there. Private physio tomorrow, get some rehab & other advice.
So, see you on the ACL rehab thread, I guess.

My shoulders are going to get strong by the end of this... Tescos provide free customer wheelchairs, Aldis don't...
And with help I have managed to get into and out of a bath Very Happy

Gosh, @Grizzler, I did not even realise from the other thread that both your ACLs gave way! Just read this whole thread, which I've seen just now. Wow... I hope the culprit gave the right details and you manage to claim damages from her insurance.

Bad situation for both of us to be in, but it is what it is - we must turn our gaze to recovery now.
Managed to research ACL injuries a bit - it appears that 2 things are key: find a good, experienced surgeon and give it all you've got during the post - op physio rehab.

Best of luck with your recovery and, as you've put it very nicely, see you on the ACL rehab thread.
