Good evening,
Travelling this Sunday in a taxi from Geneva airport to tignes les boissse.
This year we're going self-catering. Is it worth stopping off en-route to stock up on cheaper produce or not worth the hassle. I'm thinking the vital bits like alcohol would be cheaper outside tignes, is there a big supermarket in bourg st-Maurice
There's 8 of us in total, kids and adults so could save a fair bit

The Intermarche in BSM is open until 12:30 on a Sunday, what time do you expect to leave the airport ?

@mjh1972, Maybe try an Intermarche near to Geneva, there are ones in Gaillard and St Julien.
The newish Carrefour in Tignes le Lac isn't much more expensive than valley prices.

Are you sure the taxi will stop and wait for you whilst you do your shop?
They may well have a return fare they need to pick up.

No sure, we might have to give him a drink.
If he can't stop, is there a big supermarket in tignes that we could get the bus to from le boisse, beating in mind Sunday opening hours

The Super U at Bourg St Maurice`s website says it is open till 12.30 on Sundays. You pretty much go past it (and the Intermarche adjacent to it) on the way to Tignes/Val D'Isere (although I am not sure if you get to all bits of Tignes that way?)

There's very few things that annoy a self employed taxi driver/transfer driver than folks asking to stop at a supermarket and not tipping a significant amount, for a 40 min shop then at least €20. If they are employed it is unlikely that they will stop as their employer will have to pay about €18.50 an hour for their labour (min wage plus social charges). They also might want the vehicle back for the next customer.

snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

...so check with the taxi company then there is certainty over price/tip/time and whether there will be room for shopping for 8 people. When i have been travelling with 7 or 8 people we can barely get the luggage in and usually end up with the folk in the back pressed up against ski bags. We wouldnt get so much as a single bag if shopping in.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Great point.
As a plan B, can anyone suggest a supermarket in tignes that we can get the shuttle bus to

There is a spar in Boisses which is pretty decent for a resort shop.

You know it makes sense.

Somebody has, the Carrefour. It is on the Rue de la Poste, behind the Palafour block.
Not used the Spar in Tignes 1800, so can't compare them.

But they'd be shut on Sundays, wouldn't they? Certainly the big Migros in Annemasse is. It's only supermarkets near resorts which are open on Sundays and then only till mid-day, generally.
You can take "duty free" if flying into Geneva. Otherwise, looks like you're stuck with resort shops. IME experience wine and beers aren't too expensive in resort shops - and it's really not worth a huge hassle to save a few bob on an expensive holiday, surely?
OTOH thinking carefully about some bits you can pack in your luggage is worth while. Tea bags, kids favourites, mix of spices and other seasonings with specific evening meals in mind. Marmite, if that's important (it is in our family). etc etc
Apart from saving cost, shopping is not as much fun as sitting in your apartment with a glass of wine.

@mjh1972, As someone has already mentioned. Carrefour on the Rue de la Poste in Tignes le Lac. It's open late every day. Best choice of fresh & convenience foods. A fairly short walk from the bus station, either through the road tunnel or across the snow front outside the Maison de Tignes and your there.
