Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avoiding icy pistes/conditions - east/west/south/north

Hi all! So as the question says to avoid icy pistes where is it best to head to ? east/west/south/west pistes?

Follow the sun. All things being equal, North - North East facing slopes will be the last to ice up, but when they do, they will stay icy for a long time.

South - South East facing slopes will soften first, but ice up as soon as the sun goes off them. So, plan your day according to which way the slopes face.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

What altitude? What time of day? What temp did it get to the day before? What's today's temp and sun?

Generally this time of year if there has been a hard refreeze over night then east facing will soften first and on a cloudy day when air temps don't get too high north facing may never soften. Of course if they are high enough and shady enough north facing slopes may still be a bit winter chalky if you aren't too long last the last storm.

What they said.

It also depends on when they groomed it - if they just did it then it's better than if they did it last night and it froze hard.

It's easy if you ride the same place regularly. If you're just there as a tourist, then you take a different approach - just think about it, then try it, and if it's not what you expect then switch aspect until it is.

Oh, and you will often do best if you ignore what other people do. For example it may be that they all start off late in the morning, but sometimes the first few runs may be in perfect condition and are best ridden before the crowds come and mash them into a pulp... and "lunch time" may be the last of the good..

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
