I'm wondering if anyone has skied here recently? Flying out for 4 days skiing (part of a three week roadtrip) next Friday. They have a lot of snow but temperatures are due to warm up over the next 7 days, should I be worried about the snow conditions or do they groom and manage the pistes well? Can anyone recommend the best runs and places to eat on the mountian?

There's so much snow they could be skiing until June if Vail wasn't running revenue optimisation on closing dates. 40 inches in 48 hrs beginning of this week. Make sure you get out to Kirkwood at least one day.
For food I quite like Lakeside casino and the Buffet at Harveys/Harrahs is of course deluxe casino buffet.

On mountain food is Vail std burgers and rice/ noodle bowls. Nothing special or great value.

Hi @Ricklovesthepowder
Its a while since I was there 2005, I cant remember anywhere on he mountain at Heavenly that was great to eat at.
I'm sure there will be some other along soon to tell you that there is.
If you rent a car there are some much better hills around the lake, you'll be able to do all the runs in Heavenly in a day.
I'm sure you're going to be getting a whole pile of advice on this.

Forecast is for drying and warm up in the temps. More Spring like. Based on your screen name, you probably aren't going to be loving Tahoe the time frame you are out there. Storms are going to be pushed to the North with a HP building off the Pacific right to the West of California.

Also not quite a canal but there is a bit of canalised river and a decent sized marina area/ neighbourhood for a bit of casual murder/ pushing. Check out Google maps.

@Dave of the Marmottes, are these places reachable for lunch or are they down in the main town away from the ski area?

you could download the gondola to eat at a casino for lunch but not worth it I'd say. Ski hard grab a burrito or burger or chilli for lunch then eat well in the evening.

I loved Squaw Valley and Sierra at Tahoe when I was there in 2011. Sierra is only a small ski area but had a great vibe.

@Ricklovesthepowder,
I was there in, ahem, 1995 but we drove up to Kirkwood (well worth it) and got the boat across to Squaw which was good fun - big breakfast on board in the morning, ski chutes all day, drink beer on the boat back.
I remember the snow conditions being quite springlike - loads of snow which was well groomed but hard first thing and a bit slushy in the afternoon. I got the impression that is quite normal for Tahoe between storms. If there is no powder then there are plenty of steep chutes to ski - even at Heavenly

Maybe, but I am still put in mind of that Dom Joly TV programme with a line of very fat people queuing outside an 'as much as you can eat' restaurant holding plates the size of dustbin lids.

I was there in January, eating on the mountain sucks quite a bit, although the East Peak lodge had pizzas that were alright, with gluten free bases available. The gluten free versions were made on request and were bigger / fresher than the other types, so that might be my tip.
I stayed on "Ski Run Blvd" and thought the restaurants around there were decent. Blue Angel Cafe was very good, Nepheles had an awesome bar although I didn't eat there. Also closer to the lake was 'Freshies' cafe which was also very good.
All of these were partly chosen for their ability to cater for gluten free as we had a coeliac in our party.
