Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nixwax Tx Wash In

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Minime #1 spends a lot of time in a boat getting cold and wet on account of us being in Ireland where it only rains once a year*

She wears salopettes which have gradually become less waterproof.

We tried Nixwax Tx Wash In and they are slightly more waterproof than they were, but still a bit leaky. Did the cool tumble drier thing as suggested.

Does this stuff have a cumulative effect or is there something better we could try?

*It only rains from 1st January until 31st December.

What fabric are they? I TX Direct wash and cool tumble gets my MPX/HPX sailing kit as good as new again.

@Thornyhill, unlike davkt we can never get gear as good as it was when new, using wash-in. I have moved to also using the spray-on, which you can get in large volume in a Nikwax version with a hand pull spray head rather than a pressurised can a la graingers. With the Nick wax spray-on following wash-in, then tumble dry, you get a decent water repellency.

@valais2, I use the spray on stuff now too.

There used to be a Nikwax product that you used after washing and before reproofing to neutralize the detergent and restore the surface tension to normal of any water that was in contact with the clothing but haven't seen it for a while. Maybe look at how you are washing the items.

In the past proffers were long chain and now are less effective short chain but more biodegradable. However, the environmental aspect doesn't take into consideration that you have to wash more for the same effect.

There is a graingers I think called XT that is apparently good

@Thornyhill, are they supposed to be waterproof?

They used to be waterproof, so I'm guessing they are supposed to be....although whey were Matalan specials and don't appear to have a label of any description.

I would get her new ones but she is a bit vertically challenged. Long salopettes with ski boots work OK but the bottoms end up in the water when they are launching the boats.

I'll give the spray on stuff a go. Cheers all.

I have a pair of RAB walking trousers that were only ever supposed to be water repellent, but now are quite water proof using TX direct, then the spray, but usually dry on the line as we don't use a tumbledryer. They do get retreated every couple of months though and do leak from the zips as they aren't waterproof zips.
