Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Exchanging long flat things for large round things - mtb and DH

Well - at Christmas in Crans there were people with Santa Cruz and Specialised long-travel XC bikes - and a few muddy COMMENCAL DH rigs. At Christmas. Grief. And they were having an excellent time. The trails are brilliant Spring, Summer and Autumn and any exposed one was getting a lot of use. MTB activity is growing in the Alps, and there is superb DH, XC and road around us in the Valais. And I mean superb. I was involved in the first frenzy of mountain-biking in the UK - living in Brighton, the South Downs were on the doorstep and boy we used them. And I rode with a big crew - including Jo Burt, who penned Mint Sauce, when Tim Manley was in the MBUK editor's seat. It is now great to get the bikes out to CH - incredible stuff in the Val D'Herens, around Crans Montana and along the Rhone. This year, moving an Alpine 160 (Halifax!!!) out to the Valais, with my son's Commencal 24 inch....

Anyone else making the seamless move from planks to wheels in order to pound the Alps all season?.........

@valais2, Oh yes, its the nearest thing to skiing imo, great buzz. I can only ride in the Alps for 10 days a year (Arlberg in summer, end August), other than that I have to make do (!) with the Yorkshire Dales and Pennines, and I have tracks in the woods 100m from my back door.....Orange Five 1x11 Cool....just starting a Four project too.

@Scarpa, and I think Yves Caillet at Swiss Mountain Sports here in Crans is working on getting more structured fat biking going - bikes available, winter course set out and agreed with lift company etc. Hmmmm .... fat bike night riding.....better put the protection on since I am not sure Air Glacier will fly at night....

Milka Line at Saalbach Hinterglemm.

To be fair, it doesn't quite match your "big round things" stipulation. Amazing what a seven year old can do on 20" wheels.

@TheGeneralist, well, it will still be the case that - even those these are not 29 inch wheels - the circumference of the wheels will be longer than the skis he has?

Like @Markymark29, my swap isn't season long. I only ski a couple of weeks a year and I mountain bike in the alps a week or two. I do ride all year round here though... there's a lot less uplift (none) and a lot more pedaling. Still good fun.

@TheGeneralist, good stuff. We spent our active summer hols in Saalbach last summer and will be going back this year. We stuck to just doing repeated runs of the Milka line on our first day as the weather was manky - it didn't seem worthwhile going all over the mountains.

@hammerite, Only one lift allows bikes in St Anton, I prefer to earn my downhill. 1000m climbs are real fun eh?!!

@Markymark29, have done plenty of 1000m+ climbs on thinner tyres but when on a fat tyred holiday the OH tends to be left to her own devices. The uplift means I can get more smiles per mile and be back for lunch, or even better meet somewhere on the mountain for lunch!

Teenagers tend to moan with excessive climbing too! Once he decides not to come away with us there'll probably be a bit more climbing.
