Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Monarch Pooling Sports and Hold Luggage

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi, does anyone have any experience of whether Monarch allow you to combine your allowed weight for hold luggage and sports equipment? It states on the FAQs that hold luggage allowance from members of your party can be pooled, but I can't find any mention of sports equipment being included in that. I'm hoping our ski bag, which is a tad heavy, will go through based on some spare hold luggage allowance. It is a charter flight, which makes things slightly less clear.

I'm flying Monarch next week, so useful to know, thanks. I would argue that as skis go in the hold, they are hold luggage and play stupid tourist to any hard questions. I'm sure it will be fine.

Easy - take something heavy (ski boots?) out of ski bag and put it in your hand luggage. Then, after bag drop/weighing, and on your way to the outsize luggage drop, accidently trip and drop the ski boots back into the ski bag. Worked for me in Geneva recently when my ski bag was a tad too heavy.

That's a decent idea. Does anyone know if Gatwick has a separate outsize baggage drop like this?

It does, but you need a busy airport so you don't get noticed. Though from memory the bag drop was fully automated in Gatwick, and therefore easily manipulated.

When we used Gatwick outsize bag drop a few weeks ago it was definitely manned. However weighing my ski bag (at home it weighed 22.5kg with 2 pairs of skis and 1 pair of boots) it was irrelevant at checkin as bag too long for checkin scales and registered only 19kg. Very Happy If booked direct with BA, your sports bag weight limit is 23kg but skis and boots must be in 1 bag. No limit on how many pairs of skis in the bag.

For those interested, I have had a reply to my Tweet to Monarch saying "I'm sorry. You're not able to pool the sports equipment and hold luggage. The sports allowance is for sports equipment only." Which is not the answer I was hoping for, that is just the word of the customer service person running the Twitter account however.

That answer is in line with their baggage rules though. Although they do say a max weight for the bag, they also say it should have nothing in it other than a single board or pair of skis.

Yep, the outsize baggage drop was manned for me too, it was the ordinary drop that was automated, and that's where all the baggage is weighed.
