Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Traveling over Jura mountains

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We're travelling down to La Clusaz shortly and thinking about heading over the Jura mountains for a change. Having not travelled this route before are there any pitfalls of travelling on a Sunday? Are there plenty of service stations for petrol ( thirsty truck!!!!). Once down into Geneva can we get buy without a vignette or does it add hours onto the journey trying to navigate round Geneva? Any advice greatly appreciated Happy

@kez, If its summer and daylight then worth getting off the autoroute to see the scenery. France on a Sunday will be shut so petrol will be self service from supermarkets so either fill up before leaving the autoroute or google supermarkets in any major town you will pass through. Cant see Geneva on a Sunday being a problem for traffic, just drive the through middle and then back out into France, (if coming from Ferney V - airport there was a thread on various routes) just remember signs for the autoroutes are blue in France but green in Switzerland.

@kez, yeah, it's a nice drive. French supermarkets often now open on Sunday mornings for gas. Swiss petrol stations usually open on Sundays. As are big chain French ones. Shouldn't be a problem.

Its a couple of years since we took that route but there was petrol in Les Rouses then none until you get down into Gex, I`m not sure about the Sunday Opening.

After taking all the routes many many times (with and without caravan) the Jura way consistently takes longer, and very much longer if snow closes in. But it is a beautiful journey in nice sunny weather.

We have never bothered with a vignette as you can avoid the Swiss motorway and get onto the French autoroute quite easily going through FerneyVoltaire and Geneva.

Thanks all, the map books out and we're now planning our escape via this route. Cool

@kez, we use the Jura route very often when coming home from Les Gets in the spring and in the summer. There are nice spots we can have walks with the dog and stop for picnics. Lovely to do as an alternative to the motorways and saves a bit on the tolls, goes towards dinner in the evening if we are staying somewhere!

There are two routes down into the valley. One chucks you on to the Swiss motorway near Nyon (though there are no doubt ways of avoiding it)
The other _ through Gex _ takes you down into Ferney Voltaire. Best to use a map, not a satnav. The Jura route is interesting and easy. Follow signs to Geneva going south and Dijon going north. It's a well engineered main road rather than a mountain road, with several towns by-passed.
