Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can you put extra insole into ski boot to help ball of foot pain?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello,
For the last two years I have suffered when I wear my ski boots a terrible burning pain in the ball of my left foot. I think it is metatarsal or Morton neuroma. I manage it just about, by having loose boots round the feet bit, or not tight, and basically every coffee stop I would take my boot off.

I wondered if putting an insole in the liner or underneath the liner would help make it a bit more spongy to my foot. Has anyone done this or know about it. I have my own boots and at the time they were mounded to my feet. I only go skiing once a year and just potter around the slopes.

If anyone has any advice or experience I would be grateful.

In normal shoes I wear fitflops which are wide and very spongy soles.

See here for my experiences. In summary, my boots are probably too big and I shall be getting new ones. http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=3009152#3009152

I'd contact CEM (Solutions4Feet) if you can get to Bicester. I have heard that ProFeet in London are also good - but I have no experience of them.

@Hils68, the boot may have been moulded to your feet, but what about the footbed, do you have a custom made footbed in there?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ahhhhh! I don't know Hells Bells. I remember going and standing on something that seemed to measure my foot, and then it was heated, and that's as much as I can remember. It was about 9 years ago, but the boots have only been worn say 6 times since for a week. I always assumed it was the Lining boot that the mounded. But 9 years ago I didn't have ball of foot pain when skiing!
Can you get footbed for metatarsal pain then?

I suffered from this for years and particularly when windsurfing because my (flat) feet were splaying as surfing 'shoes' give little support.

I eventually resorted to surgery (I say resorted because IMO one shouldn't opt immediately for surgery without exploring other options first) and haven't looked back - now 100% symptom/pain free.

http://www.cambridgemedicalconsultants.co.uk/Mortons_Neuroma.pdf

I have orthotic inserts in my ski boots with a metatarsal pad made (after visit/consultation/cast) by this practice in London (though I saw them in Cambridge at a private hospital) http://www.thegaitlab.co.uk/

Not cheap of course, but being able to ski (never mind walk) pain free is priceless. As the old army saying goes,"If your feet are f*cked; you're f*cked.

Hope this helps.

I had that problem, and also in walking boots and sometimes normal shoes, despite living in trainers. A foot specialist made me some footbeds with a Mortons Lump on them, which kind of spreads the bones where the nerves get trapped, so they don't get trapped. It made a massive difference in ski boots and normal shoes, and some difference in the walking boots.
The guy I went to is called Graham Mann who works in Dorking, for Advanced Footcare Group. He is a skier and has worked with some top skiers, but he's not cheap.

Get a custom footbed. Solved most my issues.

if you can put an extra insole in the boot is most likely too big for your foot, you can get a custom footbed made which ahd a softer section under the ball of the foot, BUT the first thing is to find out why there is a pain there..... is it......

lack of support
lack of ankle joint flexibility
big calf muscle
high arch
low arch

etc etc, the list can go on from there, but it is a bit like a headache... you take the paracetamol but why... was the head ache caused by dehydration? or was it a cold, or was it a brain tumor???? you have to treat the cause not just the symptom if you don't want the problem to reoccur
